I myself, love Fender Jazz Bass's, But what is the best brand for me, wont necesarily be the one for you. I was on a big Ibanez kick when the Sound Gear line first came out. They actually sounded better back then than they do now, and were the best brand for me. But after buying a couple of them, I found the tone to be weak compared to many other basses out there, and the neck to be too slim. I know swear by Fender. They have the tone I like, the neck is a bit fatter, but still easy to play, But its all a matter of opinion. Whats great for one, will not be for the other.

Back to topic: What about Carvins? I agree that may not be the best basses in the world, but they worth a mention. I really love my BB75. It has many cool features. Did i mention that it's the easiest to reach 24th fret that i ever played? You have a lot of room for your left hand in the upper register. Besides, it's the best quality/price relationship. You won't find another neck through body bass with ebony fingerboard and such a lot of options for customizing at that prices. Carvin is really cool.

try the Streamer Stage I, they come with the same neck profile as the Wide Neck option models.
and judging from your profile you will probably want a traditional maple neck-thru bass anyway so the Stage I might appeal to you the most from all their range of models.

haha, i love how you said that just a year after it was posted. shoulda saved it for NOW, 10 freaking years after the last reply... talk about ZOMBIE thread. despite that, i'll bite.
idrk. i like to think i'm still trying to find "my brand". even after playing for 5 years i'm still pretty young and am on a budget STILL.. personally i think variety is good. if i could have a ric, a wal, am. deluxe P, thunderbird and a ray i most certainly would, but i don't even have enough money to afford even one of those. that being said, i'd say at this point in time i'm leaning towards EBMM. loved the sliky smooth feel and clacky tone of a stingray. but idk still, my interests and needs change all the time. i think it's something incredibly subjective.
Ibanez. Even a 300 series plays like a dream.

I have played many basses and have worked for G&L but found that my Music Man sterlings are the best. I have a 4 H and a 5 HH. The tone is incredible.....and the necks are just sick!
For me, there's three bands I like. schecter, Ibanez, and peavey. I like schecter stilletto and Ibanez soundgear basses because they can provide smooth, warm, punchy sounds. I also like peavey millennium basses because these basses has amazing sound quality at affordable prices.
I must say Fender as their P (and J) designs were done years and years ago and they are still as valid as today. It's like Porsche defining the sports car feeling. Or the design of the original computer mouse.
