Best Bass for Punk Rock?

Check out a band from Tucson called Bricktop. They have toured with Rancid and The Transplants who are (IMO) two of the best "old-school" punk rocks bands active today.

Just pointing out that Paul played a Ric on much of the first Clash album. The Fender P became famous because of the smashing at MSG that became the cover shot for London calling.

As pointed out earlier Bruce Foxton (the Jam) played a Ric

Sid was more of a character than an actual bass player. Krist favored Gibson's, Mike Dirnt started out on Gibby's...

Ultimately there is no "best bass" for any genre. P's are so popular because they have been around for so long and so many were produced. In the first wave (1976-1980) most of us were playing crappy beat to crap basses because there was no money for punk bands. Gigs were generally renting a VFW hall, getting a keg and charging five bucks a head. We were more scene oriented and all had day jobs so while the music may have been the glue that bound us together we didn't have any rock star aspirations.

I honestly think that there is nothing punk about a black pbass anymore. Punk is about pissing people off and being different. Hell the most punk bass might just be the farthest thing away what you would think. I would love to see you rock a cream hollow body with gold hardware. Just different, black pbass makes you look like everyone else. So just get in line and blend in.

Originally punk was not just about just pissing people off, it was about returning rock back to basics like it was during the early years of rock & roll. I was talking about the "classic look" of the 70's punk scene which I lived through. Of course you could use any bass for punk rock today or even then, I was just having fun with it.
By the way I think the perfect bass today for punk rock would be a Daisy Rock Bass.

Meh. I always thought of it as a "do what you want, play what you want, **** everyone else" method of music. It just happened to be most of those musicians in the early scenes barely knew how to play their instruments.

Now you have plenty of talented, gifted musicians playing variants of "punk" music. Travis Barker, Matt Freeman, Chris Hannah, Scott and Chris Shiflett. All are phenomenal musicians that are progressing the "Punk" sound. I love it.
