Best Bass for Punk Rock?

i've been playing in punk bands for just about 13 years now. i started with a p and keep going back to it after trying j's, sting rays, a dipinto, and a gibson grabber. i can get great high gain aggressive sounds with em and awesome vintage tones as well. oddly enough right now i'm playing in one of the more aggressive bands i've played in and i'm playing my most mellow tone, i love it. and yeah, the ramones, clash, sex pistols, black flag, green day, etc etc used em, you can't go wrong

Beatup P style bass with stickers & cigarette burns. Slung down around the knees. Harsh trebley tone with a pick.
Really? Only one bass for proper punk rock. A p bass. It became the weapon of choice for many a punk rock bassist because they were relatively cheap and plentiful and it has remained the standard.
Yesterday friends of mine asked me if I could fill in on bass for two of their upcoming shows and they play punk. I said yes and now I'm thinking which bass I should bring.
I could go for the Paul Simmonon sound with my p strung with flats and my vt pedal, or I could bring my Rick(also strung with flats) and play it through my Marshall guitar head, but it's only 50 watts and they have two guitar players so I don't think that's enough.
I don't get the whole stainless steel, lot of treble thing anyway. I've seen and heard two many punk bass players with p and jazz basses and svts that sounded like ****.
If I had some nickel rounds at home i'd put them on my p and rock out.

Perfect advice. A good P-Bass with some stainless roto's and your you have the perfect punk rock bass.
Hard to argue with a the recommendation for P here -- or for any genre. But doesn't it stop being Punk the moment a question like this is asked? 
I am an old dude and I don't play modern punk but I reckon Cam from Tonight Alive sounds good on his new Stingray
His P sound was good too and whilst I don't play a Stingray I think his place in the mix has some subtle tone quality changed on his Ray and its good
In saying that I also appreciate eq's might change for different rooms but I have to say I like his new Stingray sound
As for other punk, can't say cos TA is all I am currently familiar with
Ps I think he used a P for their latest album and my comments on the Ray are what I have seen and heard from TA live shows
