Best Bass Intro!

Matt Till said:
That song is originally by Joe Jackson, same intro and all.

Hi Matt.
RE: Freedom Jazz Dance
Always thought it was by Eddie Harris. Unless I'm mistaken, it's listed as such on the liner notes by Leonard Feathers & attributed to him via byline credit -"The Best of Eddie Harris",Atlantic Jazz Anthology-1970 (SD1545). (originally on his "the In Sound" Album).
Anyway, have to check out the Joe Jackson version. Thanks.
-Bill

I MISREAD YOUR QUOTE AND THOUGHT YOU WERE COMMENTING ON MY LISTINGS. Nothing like going off on a tangent that turns into a "Never Mind",moment.
...Dave, I'm feeling better now.
Gotta get some sleep and stop surfing so late.
Sorry.

Victor Wooten and Marcus Miller
"Miller Time" on Vic's Live in America Album. This is by far my favorite song right now. The intro alone is amazing, and that's just about 10 seconds or so. They slowly progress into Teen Town and finish with the same harmonic from the intro bass line....very impressive.
Some of my other favs:
Sgt. Baker by Primus
Closure by Opeth (they start softly with this one and the bass is the first thing you hear besides drums.)
There's a song by Death that starts with a badass bass line, I think it's just descending octaves on the drop d and a strings. Can't remember the name. :hmm:

Around The World - RHCP
All Along The Watch Tower - the noel redding way
Is it luck - Primus - i know its the same as the main song, but it just sounds so frantic like a bass guitar having a seizure fit.
Seven Nation Army - white stripes - stops you dead in a trance
Dreaming Of You - The Coral

its up with my heart when it skips a beat...
many more and these may not be the best but their ones ive been singing to myself at the time of posting! :D

I just heard Miller Time again when I was going through some of my cd's... I hadn't listened to VW Live in America in a while - and forgot completely about that amazing track. Thank one of my most hated programs - ITunes - because I was bring them over so I could throw them on a lame IPOD so I dont have to carry around a few hundred CD's to listen to what I want when I travel.

Edit: because of your post I'm listening to it right now... amazing.

Another one of my favorite intro's [there are soo many], but right now one of my favorites is the short slapping intro on "Victa" from VW's Soul Circus. That few seconds got one of my jazz friends to spit coffee out of his mouth all over the place... Good times.

Stanley Clarke--School Days...I know he starts with the drums too, but it's such a cool way to start a song.
Les Claypools Frog Brigade--Ding Dang. Awesome little slap line, great groove through the whole song.
Jaco--Mercy, Mercy, Mercy....It's on a CD called "Curtain Call". Kinda hard to find, but an amazing album.
Weather Report--Punk Jazz...the one from "Mr. Gone", great way to start a song.

Oh and Ozzy's Crazy Train...so simple and lame, but it's like the rock version of beginning of Beethoven's 5th, one of the most widely recognized lines ever, but so simple.
