Best Bass under $1000

I got a peavey Zephyr through neck for 500 of your american moneys. Best 500 american moneys that you could ever spend, and for about 260 the peavey milestone 3 jazz bass copy has GOT to be the best budget bass around.
I'll take a Fender P-Bass any day...under $1,000...

I second that question. A few of those brands don't seem to be around in Australia (and i definately want to have a look, feel, and listen before i buy) but one shop i went to had heaps of Cort.
Also, what about Shecter? that's another one i've seen round some of which don't seem too expensive.
Fender seems to be winning, are you including the Squier? i haven't heard much good about that?
How about for well under $1000?

ah.... $1000 USD, now this makes more sense, i was wondering where you got some of the one's your talking about for under $1000 till i worked out my poor little Aussie dollar is only worth 70c and shipping the beasts the the antipodies costs a heap...
I have the Classic 70 Jazz, and it's been a great workhorse, and has been very stable in hot, humid, and overly-air-conditioned venues. If you wait for one of those 15% off deals at MF, you can score a new one for $720 or so. Don't let the MIM tag turn you off, as they're quite good. I read some comments about the bullet-truss rod stripping, but mine has been very smooth. Like most J's it works best with a bit of relief in the neck.
I figure this is as good a place as any to put in my own query. Lemme just give some background to help this along.

Now, let me clarify "heavy metal." I mean old heavy metal. Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and Queensrÿche style stuff. Metallica and Megadeth at the heaviest/fastest, and definitely nothing near Death Metal (I hate the stuff).
Since I brought up Metallica, yes I idolize Cliff Burton (in fact, he's the reason I started looking at bass), but I don't really want to do his kind of solos yet. I'm sticking to the rhythm for now, with a few short solos for fun.
I feel like my best options would be either a Jazz Bass or a Precision Bass. The question is, what do you think would fit me better?
