If your local community has a Best Buy store that sells instruments you might want to stop in to see what they have. They are putting everything in stores on clearance. How about a Fender American Standard Precision for $800 or a Classic Vibe 60's P in Sonic Blue for $200 to get you excited. We have two BBY in our area that sell gear. Gonna hit them both on the way home from work. They are not putting instruments/gear that is sold online on clearance, just in store stock.

Funny story about this - I heard this before, and went to my nearest Best Buy that carried instruments last weekend.

I arrive there at 2:30 in the afternoon, and they tell me "we're closed for the day". Really, even though the rest of the store is open for another 3.5 hours?

I also run across an employee, and ask him if they have an American Special Precision Bass hanging on the wall. The employee looks at a bunch of cables and software and tells me no.

Is there any wonder why they are shutting down the instrument division?

Heard it before as well. Dunno if it is closout clearance or just inventory clearout. I remember a few years back they were selling MIM Teles, red only, for $350. Their current online store shows Am Std Precision, black only, for $808.

Edit: I just spoke to a Best Buy insider, living in the Twin Cities makes it easier to know them, and while this person does not work in an area related to store management or the instrument business she said that sometime last year regional managers were given the discretion to close musical instruments departments as they felt fit on a store to store basis. Best Buy has been doing poorly and the instruments portion has been one of the worst performers. Some clearanced last year, some are trying to hang on, and all will probably be closed eventually, so keep your eyes on your local store for the deals, they could come at any time.

I talked to the manager about the deals and he said that they have to get their stock below a certain point before they will receive new 2013 stock. He said that they will eventually mark all old stock down to cost just to get rid of it. As their selection gets lower so do the prices.

Nope. they are shutting the MI stores down. A couple years after they should have IMHO. You don't wait until the old is cleared before bringing in the new. People want the new, generally more so when it first ships than several months later. They'd be very very dumb to pass on those sale for 4 months. The whole experiment has been a miserable failure for BB and they had big problems outside of it to begin with.

+1, and they didn't have appropriate staff at the one by me.

Well I went to the one near me (Eatontown, NJ) and it was already pretty well picked through, but they did have some pretty decent deals still:

*Am Std P (sunburst/maple) for $800
*Am Special Jazz (sunburst/rosewood) for $649 (IIRC)
*Hartke HyDrive 112 cabinets for $249 (still boxed up)
*Squier VM Jazz (sunburst/rosewood fretted) for a little under 2 bills

And they had GHS Boomers (45-100) for $9.99 a set

As bad as BB is with instruments, THAT is actually correct. The Mark Hoppus bass is an odd instrument indeed, but check it out on Fender's site.

Glad you cleared that up. I'll tell my friend that does the ordering for BB here in Cali that he is wrong.
