Asked by one of my music heroes; it was the greatest compliment.

The best compliment I can receive as a bass player is along the lines of, "The band sounded great!" Then I know I did my job supporting the band. If a non-bass player singles out my playing, then it is, "OMG! Where did I get out of the groove and not slot the mix?!"

As a French non-pro bass player playing in fairly crappy rooms, if i get a "We could hear the bass well", i'm happy.
Most of the time, sound engineers (In France at least) are trying to copy the sound of an SVT stack and i hate that.
It crushes the tone down a rumbling non-sense.

For fun a really good pro bass player whom my band opened for his band told me "I liked what you played".
I replied "I know that's not true but thank you, you are a great musician".

When I played a gig on a university campus, this guy approached me.
I don't know where he was from, but he spoke English with a heavy accent I could not place.
He said "Maaaan, when you play the bass [dramatic pause where he stares me in the eye], you have a beautiful chakra.".

And when I helped out with a band that played something between rock, punk and post punk - but not exactly good, a fellow musician in the audience later told me that he liked how my playing served the songs.
I could read on his face that he meant that he clearly saw that I was playing with the handbrake on for the entire evening.

After a big band show in a theatre, a guy said he really liked my sound and playing. However that had to be passed on to me from the piano player. The guy thought he was me, as there is some resemblance. I have also gotten the question about why is my guitar bigger.

I went to see a friend's band last Fall. He's the guitarist and BL that I respect, 4pc classic rock. A little outdoor restaurant parking lot affair. After the first set I approached my friend and complimented him on their set. He responded that it meant a lot coming from me. I had no idea that I was held in such high regard with him.

We're a trio, sometimes struggle to fill that live sound out. While getting our show together, played a backyard party for friends and family of the drummer. One of the guests commented, "it's hard to believe there's only 3 of you with all that sound". That was a feel good.

That might be a comparison to John Entwistle. He rocked that bass while standing still, making it look effortless.

Best bar owner (himself, a performing bassist) compliment EVER in relation to the R&B band I perform with as he booked us for 12 dates in 2024: "Your band is different. You know how to hold a crowd." Plus, he plays my bass for a couple tunes and in his past had the identical 1983 Carvin PB-300 head I play at his gigs.

I had a drunk tell me “you need to play more notes” I told him I play all the notes the song requires. Next thing I knew he wanted to fight me. Turns out he was a frustrated, drunk bass player.


Another time a fill in guitar player told me, you’re good, I don’t even notice you playing. ‍
