Best Compliment/None Compliment you've received

During the '80s, I was making a living (a meagre living, but a living) playing in a band which toured a lot, and many of our gigs were on the college circuit. Often, we'd have conversations with students. Once, one of them asked me, "What do you do for a living?" I replied, "This. Music." She said, "No, playing in bands is what people do when they're kids, or in college. I mean, what do you do for a living?"
:rollno:
This line of question was very common in Australia when I was younger.
“No but what’s your real job?”
My ex’s father couldn’t comprehend that she earned her living from music. Even when she had been in the Australian production of Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar, had been on various TV shows and was earning good money as one of the busiest sessions singers doing commercials, albums and TV in Sydney.
“When are you going to get a real job?” Was his usual remark when we visited.

reminds me of something I read some years ago about Jeff Lynne from ELO... his parents encouraged him for many years to get a 'real' job... until they saw the size of his 16 bedroom mansion...

IME this truly sucks when it happens, though the more I've subbed, the less it's happened.

Good news: Congrats on achieving closure with these guys; If they call again, you've now got 'em on your "sorry, I'm booked" list.

Also good news: It helps to remind myself it's just a gig; There will probably be others.

To quote the tongue-in-cheek motto of one of the bands I play with, It's only sound... It'll go away.

Yeah. We have tee shirts.
There has been more than one gig in my past where in my head I’m thinking “This too shall pass” while the train wreck grinds onwards towards disaster.

At a recent gig: “ Hey, you guys don’t suck!”

A ringing endorsement, that… Might have to put that in our promo pack…
My old Drummer said to me once after meeting my wife at a prior gig, "Hey, your wife is really pretty!" Not hiding the total surprise in his voice. Like I was supposed to be married to an ugly troll or something. Same "compliment".
