Best compliment you got after a gig......

A local promoter put together a "best of Orlando" gig at a fairly big venue downtown. We were the only metal band there. The other bands were all really good but definitely not metal. The singer/guitar player from another band told me my bass playing was the best he had ever heard and that he was listening to my bass lines the whole show because they were so interesting. Definitely the best compliment I have ever received.

I regularly lead singing, using a 12-string acoustic, and people usually seem pleased. One very elderly Alzheimer's patient said, "You're not too bad on that guitar!" She waited about two seconds, and then said "Of course, you're not too good, either!" I have laughed every time I remembered it.

The best compliment I got was from another bass player from around this area. He came out and watched us on our night off. He said my bass playing was like a forklift. Just doin work and keeping the factory moving. I liked that.

This is one reason I enjoy dealing with the very old and the very young. The young do not understand subtlety, and the old don't care (they've earned that right) ...

The bouncer at a venue asked me during teardown if I'd be willing to give him some lessons. Of course, it was the same guy who also asked me earlier in the evening to pay a cover charge to get back into my gig after I'd already been playing for two sets but I'll take what I can get!

Dude/dudette just trying to do their job - hopefully there were so many people there to hear you that they got confused

But they probably see hear musicians there every week, so you must have impressed.

Well it's usually always people drinkin so i take it with a grain of salt but this one was from the old Guitarist from Dangerous Toys who said "Man you blew me away with those vocals". That guy is always at our shows and so positive!

A very cute young lady in a houndstooth mini skirt came up to me and in front of her boyfriend said "I never paid attention to the Bass Player until I saw you play." Talk about an awkward moment. I played it off, said thank you and kept it moving.

Last month a trio I work with once in awhile (Keys, Bass, Drums) served as backup band for a 40 min show featuring Steve DePass,
an 80 yrs young, Caribbean style singer/poet/songwriter who has performed for 4 presidents, the Queen of England & numerous TV shows.

After our sound check he pulled me aside and mentioned nuances in my playing that he really enjoyed and how he hoped to work together in the future. I felt honored to just be sharing the same space w/him and that made my day!

Compliments are rare as a bass player.
Recently a patron walked right up to me between tunes and
said, "you play some really good bass lines". I was flabbergasted.
Someone was actually listening. I thanked him twice. Made my night.

Best compliment I've gotten in a long time? First gig with my main band, "Can I have your autograph?" I've been with them for three years and I never get tired of being asked. We almost always get asked to sign something; drum sticks, pics, CDs, even a set list. I'm an over night success after only 45 years!

On our 2nd OpenMic gig, we played an alternative music set to a primarily blues and funk crowd. A guy in the front row was head banging though most of the songs! Made my night.

A memory popped into my head today. One I wished to share. While this tale has nothing to do with playing bass it is music related and you my bass playing brothers will likely understand and maybe identify with. Best compliment I ever got after a gig: Many years ago Labor Day weekend of 1975 I went to Crescent Beach. My Gainesville Brothers and Sisters will know the place. My then girlfriend and I spent a weekend at a small motel in Crescent Beach Florida. A friend owned the place. Eight or ten small cottages on the beach. We shared our cottage with a group. Such a blast it was lots of tasty adult beverages and other organic intoxicants. I played "at" guitar in those days and had found a religion behind many hours of Exile on Main Street. Learned every song. My girlfriend, Dodie, and I went to a liquor store for a bottle. We scored a bottle of Old Grandad 100 proof bottled in bond. Pretty much everybody at the motel was hanging on the patio enhancing an intense communal buzz. I dragged out my guitar, harp, and one of those neck brace apparatisi one employs to play harp and guitar. I began to recite the poetry that is "Exile on Main Street" fueled by the bourbon and the state of my love life. I poured my heart and soul into those tunes. I left all I had on that patio that night. I didn't see Miss Dodie again for more than thirty years after that night on the patio and only briefly. Oh, I nearly forgot, the best compliment. When I finished a friend said to me: " I never knew you were a blues man".

for me the best compliment ever is GETTING PAID AND CHECK NOT BOUNCING!!

A pretty popular sax player once sat in with a band I was in on a gig. Afterwards he remarked that my brother (drummer) and I were "The best wave (he) ever surfed on." Put a smile on my face.

My instant response to that would have been "and I never paid attention to houndstooth miniskirts before,
but then I saw you". Yeah, I'm from NY...that's just how we roll! As for the boyfriend, well he's on his own
if he cant control such a situation OR........ maybe he likes that kind of thing.
