Best digital wireless- Line 6, Sony, AT, ???

Has anyone held the GLXD transmitter in their hand yet?

The WA340 works by threading the locking ring onto the exposed threads of the input jack on some of their pro transmitters.

It won't work on my PGXD1, because the pack has a flush-mount, integral jack.

I can't tell for sure from photos of the GLXD1 transmitter, but while that one obviously has an exposed "neck" sticking up out of the body of the transmitter, I'm not sure if it's threaded...

yes mine has at least 4 threads sticking above the nut so there should be room to screw this on depending on how many screws of this collar it takes to tighten. good thought.

In typical detailed Shure fashion, it explains the channel count and reception limitations inherent in using WiFi based systems in high-traffic environments.

Some of the info covered includes the fact that you lose redundancy when you switch to the mode that permits more than 5 units, that you want your instrument wireless to be the last WiFi device turned on prior to the performance, that competitive products (ie; Shure, Sony, Line6, etc.) may interfere with each other, that performance may suffer or range be reduced if you have more than 3 units on stage, etc., etc., etc.

After reading it, I drew two conclusions:

1. There's a reason why pro sound companies still spend the big bucks on high-end UHF systems.
2. I feel better about my decision to purchase the older, bulkier PGXD unit. In my area at least, 900MHz performance has been stellar, and I haven't experienced any problems with snarfing up surrounding WiFi installations (or vice-versa)...
 
i think it'll be OK for the club scene which is what i like doing and there is always a cable near by to back it up. i'm looking forward to using it. i have been using a 2.4 ghz transmitter and receiver for years in my RC helicopter hobby and never had a problem and i do POV flights up to 3 miles away from my transmitter

 
I play with three other brands of wireless on stage for a total of four separate systems on stage at the same time, and so far not a single problem or issue. sure did their homework with the glxd system. its transparent and works. that's what I wanted and that's what ive got. I play mostly clubs and some bigger stages in the summer months. its very much a good wireless and does what it says it does. I couldn't be happier.
 
Yes all the systems are digital with all but one being WiFi, the other being uhf. You have a valid point and im not disagreeing with you but so far I haven't ran into any problems. I play in three bands, running from one with 100k in pa an lighting (guitarist owns a sound company) to an original project not out of the gate quite yet. The first band has a huge light show controlled by computers and lots of electronic traffic, if you will. I figure if there will be issues it will be with this group. I've only had the wireless for about a month and played only five or six gigs with it. So far so good. The test will be next sat night in a club that used to cause me fits with my old analog wireless. Ill be sure to post if there are any issues. Do far I've only been using group one for channels without issue. Group two is supposed to be used if experiencing any issues, but like I said I havent had any issues so far.
 
Just wanted to add that the battery life with the glxd is outstanding. The estimated battery time is something new for me. (I've only used older analog systems in my past) and this takes the guess work out of my battery state. In six shows I've only charged the battery twice. With my last system I used rechargeable 9 volts but switched out after two hours of a four hour night. That and the charge port on the front panel really is worth its weight in gold to me. Im not a tech knob fiddled, and like to plug in and go. A quick glance at the screen tells me everything I need to know and is one less thing I need to worry about. So far im happy with my purchase.
 
i got my GLX-D14 today with the right angle cable. the cable itself is very thin. really nice unit though. i might have to upgrade to a thicker cable just....ummm....because!

the TX is metal and very heavy duty, the RX is plastic and very light weight. don't ever drop it because it might not survive.

The stock cable is probably acceptable/ok, it's just that the pedal version of the GLXD seems to come with a straight jack, which is more handy for Strats than a Gibson LP. So I needed both :D

I've only had the wireless for about a month and played only five or six gigs with it. So far so good. The test will be next sat night in a club that used to cause me fits with my old analog wireless. Ill be sure to post if there are any issues. Do far I've only been using group one for channels without issue. Group two is supposed to be used if experiencing any issues, but like I said I haventhad any issues so far.

It's interesting to hear how the glxd works live, since there are not that many reports from other musicians out there as of yet. Not to mention how the glxd will behave in case there are many systems present, and if group 1, 2 or 3 are used. I guess the analog UHF systems has come a long way the last 30+ years. But I don't miss the early versions where you had to "freeze" into a certain position to avoid dropouts, and you could also risk hearing the local radio station broadcasting the latest news trough the amps. Good thing about the digital ones is that either you have a signal (weak or strong) but top notch sound quality anyway, or you don't have a signal/no sound. And now with the glxd who shifts freq. all by itself, this is better than ever.
 
I'm really interested in the Shure GLX-D, but I'm in a wedding band where we do a lot of venues with WiFi, a lot of venues in NYC, and we all have iPads and laptops for sheets and songs, etc etc. I had the Line 6 and it completely interfered and dropped out every 2 seconds. Piece of crap in my opinion.

I need some real user reviews, so if you have the Shure wireless PLEASE PM me before I buy it! I don't want to have another Line 6 debacle on my hands.
 
I have the system that sits on the amp not the pedal board. The battery life and rechargeable battery port is what interested me. Another feature I overlooked but find a huge importance in is the db graph showing input signal. I switch between basses, one with a hot active pre (spector tone pump) and a passive jazz during a set. The input meter has a numeric meter, and I can accurately set the input to tailor to each bass signal quickly. This keeps the signal going to my amp consistent and I dont have to fiddle with volume levels during a live show. I mic my amp so it doesn't mess with the volume going to foh. A nice touch I overlooked when looking at wireless systems but a very convenient way to get a positive consistent signal to my amp. This lower end system is very much tailored to a live preformance situation. Im playing at a weekend warrior status these days, and it fits the bill perfectly. I play with three bands, one has lots of WiFi traffic, (remote monitor settings, wifi controlled lighting, etc.) And so far its ran without issue. Very transparent sounding and just turn on and forget. This I like.
 
To answer tigers question, I have only used group 1 so far. I haven't had any issues to switch over to group 2 yet. I did notice it took about an extra second last weekend for it to scan to find channels in the heavy wifi traffic compared to last night, which was a different band with my system being the only wireless in a different club than last sat night. So I have no doubt there was some wifi traffic present last weekend that wasnt there last night. Once it locked up there was no difference in sound quality. I will be the first to post if I run into any issues though.

Both the pedal version and the GLXD14 are now available in the stores here (Norway) since late january. But lately I've been busy and I am also starting to have second thoughts about the pedal version. After all, there are some pros and cons factors to be considered with both versions.

Pros:
The GLXD14 has the advantage with the battery port, which after all is far more desireable than a regular tuner, which is no big deal to begin with. Also, it sits on top of your amp. Meaning, less likely that line-of-sight issues may occur at some point later. But as with both versions, you will save one extra spot on the pedalboard either way, because you will either need a separate tuner or you can get rid of the other one. The pedal version only needs 9vDC 200mA = output 5 or 6 (250 mA) from the Voodoo Lab PP2+. And only a patch cable is required.

Cons:
Line-of-sight issues are more likely to occur with the pedal version. Plus putting a digital wireless on a metal pedalboard and surrounded by other metal objects in addition, is not the ideal location to begin with, although I have never experienced any issues in that respect with my G30 whatsoever. You will also need the extra 20 feet cable going from the GLXD14 to the pedalboard, which is no problem because the output signal is buffered = near zero capacitance and HI freq. loss in the other end of the cable. It's more the practical downside of it.

There are probably other factors that could be added to the list both ways, as well.

Bottom line: the pedal version is far more handy, while the other one is more to be preferred from a pure technical point of view, plus the battery port. Which then pretty much leads me back to square one.. :D
 
My G30 is eating batteries too.

I also have to stress that line-of-sight issues are very hypothetical in this context. Heavy Wi-FI traffic in the area and many different 2,4 GHz wireless systems present at the same time, is a more potential issue. But, if so, the new Shure GLXD has a much smarter way to handle this than the G30. Plus the batteries lasts forever :D

The battery port is definitely a big plus when considering the larger unit but the tuner is definitely a plus for some users, and I for one like the idea of having the tuner, which I guess points me towards the pedal unit.

There's only one of my pedal units I've had dropout problems with and that was the original X2 which would dropout at times with my body between the transmitter and receiver. No problems ever since making sure it was behind me, which brings me to another point of consideration when concerns about line of sight are brought up. There's no reason that pedal receivers can't be set on top of a speaker (which is where I put mine) or anywhere else handy.

All great points brought up and for each user the decision has to be made between ultimate portability, the tuner and the battery port.
Since I like to keep the receiver together in the guitar case, the smaller pedal unit is probably the way I'll end up going but in the past when I had my wireless rack mounted with the PA, I'd have immediately gone with the handy battery charging aspect.
 
If I know myself, I will most likely buy the pedal version first, and maybe the GLXD14 in addition later. Whether the 2. battery is charged trough the GLXD14 battery port, or a separate dock charger like the SBC902 below, doesn't make much difference after all. Besides, both batteries can be pre-charged and then you have like 32 hours anyway :D

The tuner option for me wasnt a big deal. I have a snark tuner that clips on the headstock and this has been my main tuner for the last year. Currently I dont use any pedals, I had in the past, but for what im doing now I dont have a use for them. If I was consistently using a pedalboard that would have probably swayed me towards the pedalboard reciever model. I do like the travel case that came with the non pedal system as well. Just another nice little touch.
 
The system also comes with a usb charger you can hook up to the transmitter (like a phone charger port) and can hook up to a computer to charge it that way. Its a lot. Slower than the charging port, but the light on the transmitter will go from red to green when its charged. The funny thing is you really dont have to charge it very often at all. I havent charged the battery in two weeks and I still have an estimated battery life of around nine hours. This was after two shows. I have practice with two bands this week and as an experiment im going to run the battery down to nil to see how accurate the battery runtime display function is. I will report my findings sometime this week.

I like the idea of being able to just plug in the transmitter too and will be watching to see your report on runtime accuracy.

How long are the gigs that you're getting this kind of runtime out of?
