Double Bass Best EQ pedal for pizz and bowing transition

Hello!

I'm slowly building my live setup and I'm looking for a good EQ pedal to match the volume of pizz when I'm playing Arco and also to cut the hi-frequencies when playing amplified.

I'd like something that doesn't take too much pedalboard space. I was thinking about the mooer graphic EQ, source audio prog-eq or the xotic bass BB preamp. Anyone have experience with those? I'm also opened to suggestions!

The EQ will be in a loop with a reverb pedal so when I'll be switching from pizz to Arco I'll only have to toggle a switch from my loop!

Empress ParaEQ has worked great for me. It's easy to want to use a drastically different EQ for arco, but I've found the best results with a little high-end roll off and a volume attenuation.

In a pinch, I've used a RedEye Preamp/DI which is a very simple, but very clean boost/DI pedal. I set the boost part for my pizz playing and then use the footswitch as a volume reduction when switching to arco. Works great.

While I like the Xotic BB for what it is, the eq is likely too broad for your application: each knob covers a pretty wide freq range. A more surgical graphic or parametric might be better suited for you.

But if you have other needs for the BB (for slab maybe) it might be worth a shot to see if a gentle reduction on the highs on it works in your situation.

Otherwise it'll just depend on your budget and how picky you are about noise. A boss bass eq would do the job.

Even a simple Boss 7 Band graphic bass eq will work fine. Lots of people use that unit for the very job you describe. It's inexpensive, and tough too.

Just curious, what kind of strings do you use, I my own experience I found that once I switched to Evah Parazzi's, their wasn't as much difference between arco and pizz volume. But that's
just playing Jazz, not pit orchestra work. I could see where you'd need a different setting doing a show.

I use spirocore light. There is indeed a volume difference between Arco and pizz.Yeah I would use the EQ for that purpose but I also play a lot of electric, so having something reliable and noise free would be great

I owned the Empress Para EQ, the one with the gain boost knob, a really great pristine sounding hi fi unit. Mine failed though, the guys at Empress sent me a new one and I decided it was a bit complex and touchy (settings easily bonked in transit) for my gigging circumstances. I use a 10 band graphic from Whirlwind now when I'm in circumstances that call for quick eq changes on the fly. Built like a tank.

Well, I'd really suggest finding someone who has a bass fitted with Evah Parazzi Weichs, to try them out through and amplifier switching back and forth between Arco and Pizzicato. If you like them then you can do a search in the TB classifides, for a lightly used set, so you can work with them before you comitted yourself to a new set. Just a thought. You already own a Lehle Bass Switch and a Pike Audio Vulcan pre amp.

That's a very cool box and I could see
where that would be an excellent solution. I had considered the Source Audio Pro EQ before I purchased the Grace Felix, but it just might work. Although I've had some success using Spirocores for bowing in a ensemble setting, I much prefer Evahs arco. Just my take.
