Wow. When i read your topic title, Karen was the first to come to mind. She had such clarity and diction in her voice, like Ella Fitzgerald....
I’m a fan of them as instrumentalists.
I’m also a fan of Neil Peart’s songwriting.
For me, Geddy’s voice is better suited for some of their songs than for others.

Lots of great choices--so I'll go with two for different reasons
But overall--no matter what style Mahalia Jackson.
You really felt she meant what she sang, and regularly sends shivers up my spine with how good she was.
And the other--while her talents go beyond rock--she has a fantastic voice and expression--even now...

Horses for courses. Watch Kiri attempting jazz standards in the clip posted earlier ... she does sort of ok, not terrible, but definitely not great either, in that genre with a different feel than her classical wheelhouse. There is no best, just many different flavors to enjoy, bless them all.

The vast majority of responses seem to be within the context of their nominees' genres. I chose to give my opinion on the face value of the question which is non-genre specific. Maybe that's the inherent flaw here: you really can't remove the nominee from their genre without coloring the outcome.
Many good names here (with maybe ono notable exception
) but I think they all have to be considered within their wheelhouse or all bets are off.Except for Emily Cheung and Kiri Te Kanawa of course....

Good call! I only know her work from this one tune
...but I love her voice so much there that I really should check out more of her work. I saw that at least as of a few years ago she was singing in a Yes tribute band called Fragile.
