If you can choose just one “best” singer you’re probably thinking of just one genre. Here’s my short list, and I’m sure I’m not remembering a couple important ones. I hope that some of you find new-to-you music among these. (FWIW I am not a fan of all these but I still recognize talent. I dislike opera so I won’t list anyone whose work I don’t know.)

Very subjective question with too many factors to consider. I can’t disagree with Karen Carpenter though. Her singing always brings tears to my eyes. I like me some Björk as well (although I like that Family Guy reference of her singing).

I’m choose Morgan James though. Sang for PMJ, and this version of “Maps” is so expressive and she lets loose at the build up. Sooooo good.

It’s just ridiculously broad, and I submit that people notice that less when they ask about a female voice. Like seriously? This is a question we’re asking?

I agree the thread question might as well be ’How many angels can stand on a pin head?’

However, the posts so far have stayed on point - musical talent. Makes little sense to react to something that hasn’t happened - plenty of other things to stress about.

One positive from this subjective conversation is finding out about some music & artists one didn’t know about before - could be worthwhile. Ditto a male singer thread.

I’m sorry, what hasn’t happened that I am reacting to? My point is I could name 100 great female singer…at least. None would be the “greatest.” Like maybe a genre? It’s just too bizarre, simply a reflection in each case of the limited things each person has been exposed to. I agree, many greats named. And many more could be named. It’s not really enlightening to me, but carry on.
