There is no best. Just what sound appeals to you at a certain time. However let me throw out a name of a man that made the bass lines that inspired me from childhood and will into the future - the "Senator" - EUGENE WRIGHT! He wasn't real fancy, but sooooo solid!

But yes, "best" of anything for music is not really something that can be judged like weightlifting or drag racing. Its not a single axis measurement.
