Best Noise Gate?

If you use high-gain distortion a noise gate is a useful tool. That is not a problem with the signal chain. I like having the Boss NS-2 on my guitar pedalboard for that reason.

But I don't use any distortion with bass and have never needed or (prior to this thread) ever really thought about using a noise gate with bass.

The only reason I ever even asked was due to my now sold Darkglass AOU.

The noise gate in Zoom pedals are actually excellent. You could even run a couple noise gate blocks at once with different settings on each to meet your needs.

I've used a Decimator II G String, Decimator II, and Decimate. Of those three I liked the Decimator II most. It's heavy though. I would put it toward the top of my list.

I didn't have much luck with the TC Sentry.

The Church I play in is old and the stage lights and poor electrical system cause my bass to pickup noise it would never have at home. It's especially bad during, or right after a lot of rain. The bass is fully shielded and if I play somewhere else it's fine. A gate that doesn't suck all the highs out of my bass would be nice but I've only tried our guitar player Rocktron and it wasn't great.

Curious do you know if it was specifically the "Guitar Silencer" model? I have had great experience with that one but I think they made another one not so good. Even with the Guitar Silencer you have to be careful with setting the "Hush" function or it will cut highs.

There is no fixing the core issue of a certain otherwise-desirable fuzz pedals, other than a good gate. I've never found a self-gated fuzz that has the low-end dynamics of say, a (Green Russian) muff, and so a gate is very useful in that application. Now if you'd kindly invent a Green Russian muff that is noiseless, I'd be happy to lose the extra noise-gate pedal!

Yes. Fuzz pedals generally operate with high gain. High gain raises the noise floor, the same noise floor that is always present even in the cleanest of signals. Is there something wrong, that I'm not thrilled to hear it in between my notes? Do you know the difference between noise, harmonic, and intermodulation distortions?

That’s totally valid. I would characterize your responses as picking bones. Having sim different opinions and uses of pedals is the rule, judgemental comments about a type of effect isn’t useful ime

Reviving an old thread. Getting a lot of hiss when my b3k is on (which is basically all the time). I don’t need anything fancy with an effects loop, just a simple noise gate that will kill the hiss when I’m not playing. Decimator II perhaps?
