best octave pedal for bass???

IMHO of course,

EBS OctaBass sounds the most "natural" and tracks well
OC-2 is "the" sound, but is a little synthy in nature
OC-3 tracks very well, guitar input is better tone-wise
MXR BOD - tracking is spotty and I've owned three
POG - just not my taste sonically
Line 6 M series - digital tracking, analog warmth, very good.
TRex Octavius - high hopes but tracking was off
Octron - really need to try it some day

I will say that selecting the right amp/cab when demoing an octave pedal can make all the difference in the world.

Surprised nobody has mentioned the Eventide Pitchfactor. Yeah, it's expensive, but you get what you pay for in this case I think. Tracks flawlessly, can do whammy stuff and more, and has at least four or five different ways to do octave up & down, each with their own flavor-- "pitchflex" for whammy or pitchshift (much less digital sounding than the POG2 I owned, especially if you use the hpf that effects the wet signal only), "octaver" for OC-2 style/analog-ish sounds, and "Synthonizer" for well, more synth like tones.

My favs are the ones I own: I have 2 analog and one digital octaver.

Analog:

Boss OC-2 Octave: this awesome classic octave is just perfected those FAT tones. I did the synth mod to both the -1 and -2 on I individual switches. I also had an output boost installed that makes the -1 and -2 at unity.

Madbean Low-Rider (Pearl OC-7 Clone): little more organic than the OC-2 with a fuzzy +1 analog octave (can get really gritty and I like it)

Digital:

EHX HOG: after owning a POG,POG2, Boss PS-3, Mooer Pitch Box,Digitech Whammy and trying out an Eventide Pitchfactor extensively the clear winner in tone,options,function,tracking/detecting, and this can handle anything you throw at it. It's insane and that's why I like it!

The Mu-Tron and the BYOC sound identical to me. Glad to see those old Mu-Tron designs live on...well most of them, anyway. We could do without the Gizmotron coming back.

I prefer the OC-2 for down, and the Micro Pog for up. That's because that's what I have for octave boxes ;)

Another vote for the MicroPog here.

I've owned the EBS, MXR (old one and newer BOD), the Ampeg Sub Blaster and an OC-2. I liked the way the OC-2 sounded but couldn't get past the crappy tracking. The MicroPog tracks great, and although it does have a bit of a synthy sound, works well for what I do.

I would like to try the Octron at some point though.

Posted in here before, but I'm still going strong with the Ampeg Sub Blaster. They're not easy to find, but I love it.

Tracking is slightly inconsistent at low E and beyond, but it gives it personality. It booooms! Also great mixed with a fuzz.

If I need constant steady tracking, I have an OC-3 for that, but that gets rare usage.

Hey silly, where did you find the mod for your OC2? I am receiving mine later this week and am thinking of doing the same thing eventually. Possibly.

If you look up "synth mod boss octave" there is a thread started by gastric. There is a YouTube video that has step by step instructions as well. Also if you need any help let me know and ill do all I can.

Thanks buddy, I appreciate it. I'll check it out. I want to play with it for a while and see if I even need/want to mod it for my needs first but I'm gonna check out the YouTube video and thread in the meantime.

I have had the EBS OctaBass for many years and it works great. "Musical" tone and really good tracking. I also have the Digitech Bass Synth Wah. Even better tracking but less inspiring tone and does not blend with the clean tone as well as the EBS does. The differences are not big, though - both work fine for me when I play with the band.

I have the EBS (old and new version) and the new MXR BOD. The MXR has the best tracking by a long shot. As to sound, that's kind of down to personal preference, but the MXR is quite versatile with the Girth and Growl knobs and mid button, it can do slightly synthy as well as more smooth and dubby.

If you want to mix your octave with some dirt. The OC-2 will really be your best bet. That one should be close to the front of your chain so it gets a strong signal. I tried the Aguliar octamizer and liked it, but it was great for really low "clean" subs. It did not mix nicely with dirt. I actually think the aguilar can almost sound like a meatbox.
My next octave will be the micro pog. I wanna try the digital vibe. But it won't be for a while.
If you go with the OC-2, try it first before you mod it. Especially in front of that B7K (oc-2>B7K>amp). A buddy of mine had a OC-2 with the "Synth Mod" and I still bust on him for making a great pedal sound silly and unuseable. Funny thing is, he swears he likes it better, but I never hear him turn it on anymore. If you want a synth try the markbass synth. Leave the already awesome OC-2 be. Just my opinion of course.

I totally agree with you, I wouldn't mod it without getting some play time with it. I don't really think I will mod it because from all the YouTube vids I've seen on it it sounds like its exactly what I want. I can't wait to get it this week. It was just a thought to mod it. And I always put my octaves first to second in my chain. They just work there better for me.
