Considering Kolstein...
Current status of Kolstein (as of late 2025):
Kolstein Music, Inc. is still in an active Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceeding. Multiple civil lawsuits by former customers and consignors remain legally pending but are currently stayed due to the bankruptcy. No public court rulings or settlements confirm that all claims have been dismissed or resolved. Public statements by Manny Alvarez claiming that all issues are “cleared” are not supported by court records, and investigations into the company’s past business practices are ongoing.

Is Bill Merchant still active? (I think he's sort of upstate, not in NYC any longer...)

Bill's no longer active with bass repair and he recommended David Perrott to me.
Given the drama and some really scary stories, I would avoid Kolstein. Even in his heyday, the work had a checkered reptuation. I bought a bass last year that had been restored by Kolstein 15 years or so ago, and while the interior work was adequate, I ended up having Robbie Macintosh do quite a bit of the exterior work (bridge, nut, saddle, soundpost, tailpiece, fingerboard) again and it completely changed the bass for the better.
Someone suggested Keiran O’Hara, that guy has a great reputation. It might be a little far for someone on LI.
