Double Bass Best place in NY for bridge work

Looking for recommendations on a place to take my sons bass for a checkup, possible bridge work, and also possibly an appraisal. Also, looking for a place where he can try out a few bows. And string recommendations.

We bought what we think is a used Juzek bass from someone who rebuilt it. It has the symbol on the back that we think is Juzek, but no info on it inside. Want to see if we can find out for sure and also appraise it for insurance.

One of the strings is vibrating, the teacher suggested it might need some bridge work done.

The bass has two jazz and two orchestra strings. He is a high school student that mostly plays orchestra in and out of school, but does do some jazz band music a few times a year in school. Suggestions on brand and type for his use.

As for bows, he has always played with a german bow, but can play with a french and always used whatever brand german bow was provided with the instrument. He is interested in upgrading, but nothing very expensive.

We live on Long Island, have read about Upton and Finley and Gage.

Also, depending on where on LI you are, if you're further east, my friend, Brian Chabza, owns Sound Beach Music and does fantastic repair and setup work. He made my bass sound incredible. That said, I'm not sure he would be able to appraise, nor does he have a large selection of good bows to choose from.

My dentist does great work & I'd be happy to give you his number.

I think this post might be in the wrong forum, though. Or maybe I am...

Is Kolstein's Baldwin shop still operating? Manny is neck-deep in bankruptcy filings; he's got about $4.6 mil in claims against him and I think all the basses are in Florida. Not sure he'd be giving you the best work right now.

Supposedly all of the legal issues have been resolved and they are operating as usual.

So says Manny, but the bankruptcy case is very much active. Creditors met with the court trustee on Monday, and recently the trustee filed a motion to move the case from Chapter 11 to Chapter 7 (ie, shut down the business) because he clearly suspects fraud. Manny did settle with Barrie, though.

I am happy to supply the court documents showing this, which are available through PACER, so you'd need a login otherwise.

Duly noted!

The Kolstein shop is not what it once was. The lights in the main room weren't even on when I went there a couple weeks ago, and the place is practically empty. I'd go to Jeff on long Island
We rented from them years ago and were not overly impressed. Combine that with everything I have read in the news over the last year, I was looking to avoid if possible. Definitely going to call Jeff.
