Lastly as a first generation USA punk - Darby Crash is without a doubt the penultimate punk bassist of all time!

Two mistakes here..

Darby Crash did not play bass, and penultimate means "second last". The second one seems to be a common mistake on talkbass for whatever reason.

Gerry Casale - Devo

Hells yeah. For my money, Devo is one of the best and most important bands of the 70s AND 80s.

They did go on to suck for a stretch, but their first 4 albums are so great it negates all the hokey crap they did.

I think a lot of people are missing the point here. Punk isnt about technical excellence is it? Punk started and ended quite abrubtly - as good as some of these modern players are, they can never come near the likes of Dee Dee Ramone - he was a punk rocker.....

After perusing this entire thread, I was shocked it took 91 posts for Chuck Dukowski to make the list - what a sin.

Talking Heads, Replacements are not punk rock - as much as I love the Replacements they are not punk rock.

Bauhuas = punk, yeah right.

Greg Norton was a way late add.

How could you posers miss Pete Farndon??? The Pretenders first album was not one of the best albums - ever!

I believe that. It sounds like an awesome way to tune your bass.

come to think of it, it WOULD be pretty cool (you could fret the same note on two strings and have an artificial chorus effect rather easily), but you'd have to use a custom set of strings, which for some reason I can't see Dave Blood doing.

Personally, i have to go with either Matt Freemen(RanCid)

Matt Freeman hands down. I wouldn't play bass if it wasn't for him..and I certainly wouldn't play the way I do if I didn't listen to Rancid growing up. Ironically our styles are very different now, but I learned all of my core scales and modes from learning his songs.
