Looks like we better agree what "punk" is before picking its best bassist. There's a big difference between Colin Moulding of XTC and Matt Freeman of Rancid. Very different styles, very different music...

...that being said, I do like Dee Dee, and Fred Smith, and Matt Freeman, and Paul Simonon (who, along with Macca, is the reason I picked up a bass in the first place). I'm surprised no one has mention the Stranglers' Jean-Jacques Burnel.

According to Bob Mould's memoir, Mould played Norton's parts on almost all of their records.
