Best rock lyric ever?

Making love in the afternoon with Cecilia
Up in my bedroom (making love)
I got up to wash my face
When I come back to bed someone's taken my place

^^^This reminds me of something my Dad told me years ago: Apparently the original lyrics to "Shake Rattle & Roll" were not "Get out from that kitchen and rattle those pots and pans" but rather "Get outta that bed, wash your face and hands" ...but censors in the 1950s found that too risqué

Anything by Billy Bragg is definitely Up There among the best lyrics ever

A friend gave me a Billy Bragg album over 30 years ago. I think I listened to it once. But I still distinctly remember this line:

"The sin of property we do disdain
No man has any right to buy and sell the earth for private gain"

He does really sharp social commentary, but also very wry romantic lines. There’s a great line in Greetings to the New Brunette: “How can you lie back and think of England when you don’t even know who’s in the team”!

And they say there's no provisions
There's not enough to go round
But when it comes to the gun there's a bullet for everyone

I may get around
I may laugh a lot
Now you'd think that I'd be happy with the life I got
Nobody knows
Nobody sees
Ain't nobody really knows the inner side of me
I may seem secure
I could have it made
You might think you see a lucky man who made the grade
Nobody knows what dreams I see
Ain't nobody really sure just who they want to be

-Billy Squire, Nobody Knows
