Best short scale under $1000?

So the Hagstrom was just way too big. I absolutely loved it for a deep sound, but there's just no way. That fact puts a lot of instruments I was considering out of the running. The aforementioned Gretsch included. The large body put the nut around the same spot as the Precision, so I can't do it. Makes me wonder about the Reverend Dub King, which I had considered a frontrunner as well.
The Musicmaster was really small. It felt even smaller than some Mustangs that I've played. Which seems weird because it's the same body. It sounded fantastic, if on the trebly end. Very expensive for what it is though.
The Guild Jetstar. Now I know what they mean by "mudbucker". It's a big fat tone, but there's no definition anywhere. i could totally dig that but I know it'd be something I only use in certain situations instead of as a main bass.
So I'm back to the Mustang. I also went to Sam Ash and GTR Store, but neither had any short scales. GTR Store was very nice and told me to send an email with anything I was interested in. They could get it from the warehouse for me to try in-store. I may take them up on it. Rudy's had an SG, and we know how I feel about those.
Next stop, Craigslist.
What about a Warwick corvette rockbass short scale? I have one and am loving it. I upgraded tuners and pickups and that's it. Great balance, lightweight, perfect frets. No dead spots!
A few people have suggested it. I've never seen one, and for this purchase, I'm going with a known quantity.
I'd say a P-Bass has more complex overtones, making it sound more treble-y and growlier/grindier. The Mustang has more of a fundamental thump.

I havent played one, but I have heard good things about the Lakland hollowbody..

I got one recently. Nicely built with good balance and great tone. I also have the Jag SS and the Jr. Jet single pickup version. The Lakland is a much nicer instrument, if at a notably higher price.
I would hope so. I do wonder how it compares to something higher priced. Like the Mustang RI I seem to be gravitating towards.
Our cellist subs for me on bass sometimes and uses a Squier Jag Shortscale to good effect when I was helping her consider options I took a Lakland 30 for a spin. Phenomenal playing/sounding bass.
