Best short scale under $1000?

I was in the same boat as you this week. I wanted to try a quality short scale that wouldn't break the bank and that could be sold easily if I didn't bond with it.

My three finalists were:

1. used Landing...seems to be sitting for sale for months. Didn't like
the EMG boost w/DarkStar setup, but seems like a great custom
built bass for the $$$.

2. new Lakland...available shipped from Sweetwater for $860 with a 30
day return policy. Hard to beat.

3. used Jerry Jones Longhorn. It'll be here in a week. Rave reviews,
a super-nice seller, and seems in high demand/short supply used.
Plus, I have had really good luck with the original Danelectric guitars,
so, sentimental value is high.

There's something about a "quality" Dano that just seems weird to me. But Jerry made some really nice instruments and honestly, if you like Danelectro, you'll love the JJ.

My Dano needs a bunch of work to be anything more than a backup. New pots, a wiring check (there may be a grounding issue), and possibly new pickups. I'm going to play it for the meantime, but I wouldn't be surprised to see something new by next week either. :D

Might give this a look see.

But for a lot less money you really can't go wrong with a Squier Jaguar SS. Good out of the box, and highly moddable. Look for the Jag SS thread to see what people are doing to these.

Also the Squier Mikey Way is a good instrument, with tragic coloring. Nothing that a sander, a little sandpaper and paint from ReRanch or Gracey's can't fix though.

I'd buy that if they made it a Precision instead.

The few Jag SS basses I've played have been unimpressive. I'd like something a few ticks above in the quality department.

I don't mind the paintjob, but I do prefer the Vintage Modified based on looks alone. They should (should) be the same specs with a different pickup. If I like the feel, I can always upgrade the pup on the VM.

I'm really loving my Starcaster

Also like my Starcaster. But I figured that since he thought the Hagstrom was too big feeling the same would go for the Starcaster or Coronado.

I'd also suggest the 2013 Guild Starfire or the new M85 when they are available.

One of mine that is a very good bass is the Gibson Thunderbird SS. Great neck, balance, sound. But since the OP said he doesn't like Gibson I didn't recommend it.

Also wish they made a Japan SS "P" version.

Thing is with these they are inexpensive, good quality and eminently moddable. Then you get a one of a kind for still not much money.

The maple/maple neck on the Mikey Way is very good, and the humbucker gives it a different sound than other Squiers.

It's a really good question that I don't quite know the answer to. All I can do at this point is try to find one to play locally. I think the bigger ones, like the Viking and probably the Coronado are out. But maybe there's still hope for something like the Reverend Dub King. I need some body dimensions to make an accurate assessment. Finding one locally isn't going to happen.
