Best Tuner?

I have been using the snark clip on tuners for a while now but they tend to work imperfectly for me with regard to bass. I get a C# instead of an A frequently and they bounce around quite a bit.
Is this normal for other folks or are there better options for bass guitar?

I still like to rely mainly on a highly evolved modification of ancestral reptilian jaw bones. That said, I've actually bought an Artec combined pedal tuner / graphic EQ today, mainly out of mild curiosity.

This probably belongs in the Accessories sub forum rather then Effects.

My Snark tuner works better than my Planet Waves clip ons.
My favorite non clip on is the one built into my TC RH450 with
matching foot switch.

In the field, I use the built-ins on my Fly-Rig and Zoom. No issues with capture or stability. Still have Petersons for detail work.

I've never had a problem with korg pitchblack or any of the small korg handheld tuners but these days just use the zoom b3 built in tuner mostly.

I've had good luck with the TC Electronic Polytune Mini. It's small, fast, accurate, reliable and visible.

Not a fan of clip ons.

Clip on tuners I have a hard time getting a clear note from, especially on the lower strings. It helps to use the 12th fret harmonic in my experience.

If you can afford a new piece of gear a pedal tuner is a very nice thing to have though.

I used to only use the little D'addario clip-on tuners and they worked well for the most part. The problem is when you're trying to tune up during an intro or similar time when there is a decent amount of noise which vibrates your bass neck and can confuse the tuner.

I got a Sonic Research Turbo Tuner and they are brilliant. Nearly as good as the highest cost bench style Peterson strobe tuners at a fraction of the price.

Never tried clip tuners. In the old days I had "not pedal" tuners. Y'know, battery only, not designed for your board. Have only ever owned two pedal tuners…

Boss TU3 is excellent, cheap second hand and as has been said would survive zombies, apocalypse etc. If it's a factor it's buffered bypass. The DC pass through is very useful. Plenty modes, high brightness function for outdoors.

Peterson Strobostomp HD. I got a bonus so bought a pedal that does sooo much more than I'll ever need. You can tune anything, any way you want to. And save it. And give that saved setting it's own colour. And customise it to the Nth degree. And make it cycle through only the tunings you use. I love being able to hit the + switch and cycle through BEADG, BEADG -1 semitone, guitar etc.

IME any modem plug-in tuner beats any clip-on. Maybe clip-ons have gotten better, but even so I dislike the look and wouldn't use one in performance.

As much as I try to keep my signal chain dead simple, I'm a fan of the boss tu3 pedal tuner. I've also got a couple cheap Korg tuners in the studio that have mics and can be plugged in.

I use the clip one for rehearsal, and I didn't like the Snark tuners either. I picked up a Korg AW-LT100B tuner that is supposed to be specific to the bass. It does a drop d tuning pretty good for me.

The Snark Super Tight was leaving the shape of the rubber feet in my nitro headstock (freshly done) so I opted for the tc electronic's polytune3.

I've have two TC mini tuner pedals, love'm, but depending on the amp there seems to be a strange bleed through with signal while tuning. Both have done this, one much more than the other. Got an old Korg rack tuner recently and much prefer using the tuner out on my GK 700RBii with it. Nothing like plugging straight into the amp with a quality cable.

For clip-on, I use the TC clip-on Sweetwater exclusive. Works far better than Snark and the cheap, bottom of the barrel types. Other times, I use a Polytune pedal. I thought the Peterson was too pricey and likely paying for the name. Clip-ons have inherent disadvantages.

clip on... This by far imho.... has a stobe mode thats good enough for intonation.
