Best universal fit IEMs???

the only thing to look at with these is the physical shape; my old superfi5 pros look just like these, and the weird thing is that they're configured so that the bend in the housing makes them stick out of your ears like the bolts in the frankenstein monster's neck!
i popped them off the removable cables and swapped them around left to right, so that they went the other way, with the bend nestling back into my ear instead of out into the air.
much less visually obtrusive on stage.

How long do the cables last with the Ultimate Ears TripleFi 10s?
I read a complaint on Amazon saying the strain relief failed, repeatedly, where the cables enter the ear pieces, requiring the cables to be replaced several times per year.

Hard to inspect the cables to see if they seem robust when shopping online.
Does anyone know if there's a model designation to look for if you're trying to buy "the thicker ones?"

There are actually many after market emplacement cables out there. Just use the search tool in either Amazon or eBay. There Are some that promise "monster cable" type specs, but really, I bought one spare cable a year ago just to have on hand and it's still in its original wrapper. I haven't had a bit of trouble with my stock set of cables.
As a hint, as soon as you get home from your gig, not the next day...but right when you get home, take your ear buds out and hang them up to "dry out". This will greatly extent the life of the product by giving them a chance to dry out from all the ear sweat.
I'm using Westone UM3X RCs, and was floored by the sound. They sound better (both fuller and more articulate) than my studio monitors. When listening to prerecorded music, I hear nuances with them that I didn't know were there before. The replaceable cables are a Godsend, too, as the cable is generally what breaks first. On the other hand, the cables are so tough that I'm not sure I'll ever break them. I also really like that the part of the cable that goes over the ear is covered/sleeved for comfort.
All that being said, I've heard nothing but good about the current crop of UEs, and for more than $100 less, I'd be sore tempted to try them first.

Oh and had to use them with the sides switched (left to right and viceversa), to not look like Frankestein, and at the same time, to get a better fit.
Just changed the wires, and back in business!

I've been using Future Sonics Atrios for a few years, they work really great for bass. Those have a single dynamic driver, but they totally kick a$$. I'm also looking at getting a pair of the UE-10's, those would be a great back-up pair, or maybe just something a little different to change things up every once in a while.
From what I've read online, burning-in of BA (balanced armature) drivers (the UE's have those) is not necessary. I've never really noticed much difference with burning in my Atrios either, but I did it anyhow, because I wanted to feel more audiophile-ish!

They are addictive aren't they. BTW, the extra cables were the actual UE cables I found on eBay for like $30. I really don't know if dropping $80-$150 on a replacement bud cable would give you the audio results they claim, but my experience has led me to buy good quality cables instead of the very high priced boutique versions. Your signal chain is only as good as its weakest link. I figure since I'm sending from my AT 3000 wireless to my Line 6 Pod Pro out to a $75 Jensen loaded DI, there's where my signal takes a hit big enough to negate the boutique cables. But who knows. I know I have never heard a difference between a Rapco Quad Flex mic cable and a Canare or Mogami or Monster.

that's what i'm using, except the earlier non-removable cable versions; they just sound hi-fi and even, everything in its place.
my older superfi 5pros have a crunchy high end by comparison.
The UM3X are very good. I actually did a try out from a store here, and thought they sounded sterile (which is a good thing).
But, the $100 difference between them and the triple fi 10s made me decide for the latter.
Tonight I have a rehearsal with monitor mixes and everything for this weekend's live recording, so updates are coming soon!
I have these too and like them a whole bunch. In fact some of the good folks here on TalkBass hipped me to 'em.
I just use the standard foam tips they came with and they work great. And at well under $200 shipped what's not to like.
