Well, all for one and one for all..
Maybe (if there isn't already) we can start a feedback forum for luthiers or maybe even a commitee from talkbass contacting the luthier on the buyers behalf (also used in the feeback forum).. just a thought. Atleast this way, we are moving towards something and the luthier will be held accountable to some degree.

+1! Great idea!

Not that that is excuseable, but have you tried calling? It seems a lot of these "old school" Luthiers are not very good with email and I would try a slightly more direct approach.

Just playing devil's advocate here, I think Small has a good point. E-mails are easy to ignore and discard. Phone calls are usually best.

Just something to consider.

Well, if you get a phone call from the Talkbass commitee then maybe you start paying attention to what your doing..kind of like the BBB of the bass world, you know? If you are in Colorado then you know, like Tom Martino "The Troubleshooter". Maybe this service would only be offered to "members" of talkbass who make contributions and maybe the commitee consists' of moderators or something..I don't know.

Also playing devil's advocate but such a system could easily lead to libel suits. Not all customers are saints...

In some places, taking someones money is called stealing and is sometimes accompanied by a jail sentence even if the thief is a genius.
The prisons are full of guys that were unlucky enough to get caught.
I know this is just sort of an inadvertent white collar crime but the end result is all the same to the victim.

I really respect and admire all Rick Turner has done for the bass community at large in terms of invention and innovation but this act "as I understand it" is totally unacceptable.

This should have been an "oops and instant refund" with an "OPTION" of waiting for the correct item to be built.

I can name a number of Luthiers who would do just that for a screw up of this magnitude.

Just my .02.

The guy's paid for the bass in full over a year ago. I think he deserves a whole lot more than a service that ignores and discards emails. But as stated above he has made several attempts to call on the phone too.

I don't disagree. Just playing devil's advocate, as stated. Also offering the idea that a phone call is usually more effective, though not necessarily in this case, unfortunately.

Don't get me wrong - it appears to me that Turner is completely at fault here, regardless of the manner of communication used.

I've had a couple similar experiences with custom builders in the past but they did work out in the end. Back before Attila Balogh started making production basses, I gave him a deposit to build me a bass. He said to get the pickups and he'd start. i ordered a set of pickups from Alembic and sent them a money order for the full amount. It took over a year before I got them. After 6 months and after calling a couple times, I started calling almost every week. I was always given some excuse. Finally, something like 14 months later I got my pickups. I delivered them to Attila and he said he was backed up with work but would start as soon as he could. Two years later, after he'd started up his production company he called me up and apologized, saying he'd been too busy getting his business off the ground to do it. He offered me a refund of my deposit or I could use the deposit towards one of his production basses.

I went for the deposit, which he prmptly returned, along with the Alembic pickups. I sold the pickups for about the price I paid for them.

I had no hard feelings towards Attila because he was honest about it. Alembic I didn't feel so good about. This was back in the 70s. I think Alembic has straightened out their act since then. Attila sadly, passed on some years ago. Too bad, because he was a good guy and an incredible craftsman.

Maybe we in this TB community should start a call campaign. We can target those dealers and builders who flake out on one of our own.

Imagine how amazed Rick Turner would be if he had 50 phone calls a day from bass players rallying around one of our own.

The older I get the less tolerant I am of bad behaviour and flaky business dealings.

I wouldn't do it without knowing both sides to a story. You could end up looking like a pretty big jerk.
