Big changes in the past year

Well, i started off with an Ampeg 2BR-E with SVT Classic 410 HLF (i think thats the model) and the SVT Classic 15 cabs

I also had a Zoom Multi Effects, which i sold.

I then bought an Aguilar DB-359 (love the tone for fat, thick, warm bass)
And to go with it i got an Orange 410.

That is now my main setup.

I sold the 15 inch Ampeg, I'm trying to sell the rest of the Ampeg stuff to make back some money for a computer.

Even though this is the amps forum, i bought many effects pedals and built myself a nice pedalboard.

As well, bass wise i started off with a Spector Legend 4 string with a Bubinga finish. I added a 5 string Legend with an Amberburst finish. Im soon to add a Gibson Grabber to the list. :) (a bass ive wanted for years)

Twas a good year, i finally upsized after talking about it for months, and i added a bass I should have gotten a year earlier.

I bought recording equipment as well. Though I wont bore you all with those details.



Things to look forward to this year:

Possibly cloning some of my effects pedals (and others hopefully) into one custom multi-effects.

Gibson Grabber :).

More recording equipment/studio building.

Possibly adding another Orange 410 to my rig for more power.

Searching for another head, something less warm, with a little more crunch and dirtier sounding (for variety in my setup, as i now play in a metal-ish band besides my main ambient/experimental band).

New basses? Who knows what will come up :)

Well, you pretty much answered accurately. And it's really not much of a pain at all. Takes maybe a minute longer to set up. It's totally worth it to me.

This year i've switched from using a rather trebley cutting hifi tone to a fat bassy tone which started about the same time I sold my Mesa 410 and purchased a 610hlf. Its taken me months to figure out my new tone and to learn how to crank up the bass knob rather than use too much mids, the VT Bass was the final piece in the puzzle.

Next year I will probably be looking at getting a 2nd bass and another cab, looking at Berg 412 or 610 or maybe a GK neo cab and I would'nt let a peavey 215 pass me by.

I've seen your setup, and the mike is positioned very well with that little thingie. Nonetheless, has there been the occasional case of extraneous sound being picked up? Or how about this: did you ever get blamed for a sound crime you did not commit for mic'n your amp?

I went fretless and then EUB, and the transition continues.

So I work on the EUB and the fretless mostly these days and nights (intonation and technique are daily workouts).

Would like to expand to DB in 2009 but I'll need another car for transport, and an amp....

Nah, not at all. Once I got someone who wanted me to turn up because he wasn't getting enough signal, but that's about it.

I use the VT all the time as an OD unit. I use the LMII on gigs where I have a tough load-in or outdoor gigs where it looks like rain, or the occasional stage volume gigs, things like that.

BTW, I posted a thread with some recordings I did with Bowzer in the "recordings" section using my 77 B-15N with the PR 40.

Love that Thiele cab on the 77! As you'll hear, it takes up a huge amount of real estate on the bottom ;)

wow.. its been a weird year...

i started out with my modulus flea4 > gk 800rb > BFM omni 10.5 + 215(no name)

then i went to using the BFM with a single Genz Benz 115 and an ESP F105

then i though i was going to downsize even more and got a GK MB2-500... however i picked up a Madison 810! haha... fun year.

I really appreciate you guys on TB, helping so many noobs make better gear choices

heres 2008!

started with:
squier p-bass (sold now)
yorkville xm50c (sold now)

level'd up to:
American pbass(current)
little mark 250 (for sale)
swr goliath jr. (for sale)

and very recently:
ampeg SVT-15E x2 (current rig)
Markbass SA450 (current rig)

only used a pick
relearned fingerstyle
went from being in a garage band where i switched to guitar, to a gigging touring band where i jumped in on bass
played more bass this year than all other years combined, and i think next year will be the same!

Recently I decided to start taking my fretless BGs out to some open mikes and public jams to see if I can't drum up some gigs on something besides my EUB. I had zero gigs this year on BG or guitar -- a new world record!:p

Going further with that riff, I started restoring my '77 Travis Bean, and actually hauled it across the river to an open mike with pretty swell success. Still weighs about as much as Oprah on a bad day though...

My main change was starting to cycle away from a commercial amp/cab rig towards a mostly homemade one. I'm just gonna make my own stuff a little prettier and not worry so much about appearances beyond that. When I got a lounge-jazz gig 5 years ago I assumed I needed an understated corporate look to some degree, but eventually I realized that no one is paying much attention anyhow -- D'OH!

Part of the transition to DIY stuff involves going back to 15s from the 12s I've been gigging with for the last 5 years. With a mid driver and tweeter in the mix, it's a whole different thing now for me.

Hopefully the next big change will be going back to doing my own original music again. No pain, no gain...

Travis Bean, huh? Good luck to your shoulder! Great basses but they weigh as much as Opra...er...never mind...

I'll tell you though...I love playing upright and would love to play one fulltime. But there just isn't enough call for upright players that can't play in tune and don't have a huge jazz repertoire. Fortunately, I'm in one of the few bands in town where the ability to do upright stunts is appreciated as a musical skill ;)

Big year for me.
Got back into playing music after taking 2 1/2 years off as I decided to get sober.
Knew I couldn't hang at the studio or play at bars if I was going to stop drinking.
Ironicaly, sobriety also guided me into a separation with my wife of 18 years (remember that song by the Bottle Rockets "when my drinking days are through, I'll be through with you")?

But I digress, back to playing a Jazz bass with Dimarzio's that I've had for 25 years; been using the SVT3 Pro instead of the Classic, and thanks to Talk Bass, got excited and bought an old Trace Elliot AH350X head through a single 15.

Thankful to have found you knuckle heads and this site!

1. I went through too many basses to count, only to go back to a Fender RI 62 Jazz. Although I would like another bongo.

2. Bought a couple of P's only to reinforce #1.

3. Spent way too much for a Skunkworks SVT. Think I'll stick with that one for a while.

4. Never used effects, used them for a couple of gigs, never again.

5. Bought a bunch of stuff I didn't need, will soon sell it for a loss.

Heads:
For the past several years, I've gone back and forth b/t a TFB420 (and then got a 550B) and a WT800b. Loved the TFB for double bass, and the WT800b for electric.
Then, I got a Mesa Walkabout..which-believe it or not-seemed to be the best of both. I used the Walkabout Scout for most everything. Occasionally added a Mesa Diesel 115 underneath it when I needed something bigger.
I flirted with an Aggie DB680/QSC 2402 rig: great tone, but really a rig, heavy rack. Buh-bye.

Speeks:
Mostly, been using the aforementioned Scout.
But, I had a Schro 410R. Sold it, got a 410L; liked both of those equally well...flipped the 410L when the next gen stuff came out. Totally did not like the new 410.
I also had two Schro 1212L's. I've always liked those best for double bass use, with the TFB. Kinda thought I'd like two of them stacked. Didn't. Flipped one; still like the TFB/1212L combo tho. Still; don't use it much, as I can "one hand" the Scout.

For bigger stuff, I started using the Hnery 8x8 with the Walkabout head. Liked that enough that when another Walkabout head (in the Mesa headcase) came up on ebay, I bought it. (I know, should be up above, with amps).

Then, started back to using two older Mesa Diesel 115's with the Walkabout: man, stone cold vintage heaven!

For more modern sounding stuff, I messed with both the AE410, and 410UL. Both of which I like very much. But, both of those sometimes wanted more juice than the Walkabout had, sometimes. So, started backwards on heads. The TFB and WT800b both kick butt with either of those cabs.

Reminding myself with the Mesa Diesels that I did actually like 15's but wanted some top end, I tried an NV215. Not enough top end. Flipped it and went thru a Dr Bass phase while in continuing search of "ultimate tone." 1580 under, 1260 over. Great rig, but I had plenty of one cab solutions that were equal to it. Both Dr Bass cabs gone now.

Been on an LDS kick lately. I have one 2x12+2x6 that does vintage really well....And a 2x8+5/2x8+horn mini stack that just kills. And, a 4x8+ horn...love it as well.; but it'll probably leave as the 2x8's present the same sound in an easier package.

Lastly, I got to mess with Tombowlus's Mesa Carbine.
Which for now, seems to be the end game. Massssive power. Great tone, in several easily accessable varieties. "click." eq preset changed. you're done. it pairs well with every cab and bass I've thrown at it.

So, in conclusion...
The Walkabout is my DB mainstay, and I use it for electric jobs where I need an easy load-in/out.
The Carbine M6 and one of about 4 really killin' cabs gets by bigger electric jobs done.

And just cause I can't quit, and I still have a racked poweramp, I have a DB659 coming.

Hey guys.

This has been a big year for me- I've pretty much nailed the sound(s) I'm after.

- I've added a '74 Ric to the arsenal- with flatwounds its covering all my original pop gigs ATM.
- Swapped the SWR G3 for a DB112 (another one on its way). Much more focussed lower end, easier to haul and TWEED.
- Picked up a Shuttle 6.0 mid year but recently scored a total GEM of a 120watt tube amp- hand mad in Australia- which is covering my gigs nicely so far- so the shuttle might soon be on the block.

The other big thig.... flat-wounds are taking over my basses. The Jag is now sporting flats.
