Big changes in the past year

Wow really? I found that I could even get enough glassy bright highs out of it to compete with the low end, if you tame the right bass frequencies you can get even some really silly high frequencies to come through. Not the way I have my bass setup, but there were a couple of people using my rig that didn't know what to do with it who wanted it "y'know, like really clicky and stuff" and I managed to get a pretty decent scooped sound out of it for them.

Since I've in all likelihood blown my 6.5 in that little incident one of the guys on here called Alex Calber (or something like that) said that there was a really decent mid driver that's a bit more sensitive and can take more punishment that should be more to my liking. I can get enough mids and highs out the stock mid driver, but it does seem like I'm forcing it a bit, plus he said he'll sort out a crossover to match it that'll bring the crossover a little higher from 800hz to 1k which sounds good to me, mids through well made 15s tend to sound good to me, and it's not too high for it to cause too much nasty off-axis nonsense.

On the other hand it'd cost me £150, but I can foresee myself blowing another stock one anyway playing what I play with it, so it's probably better for me in the long term.

After years of tinkering and playing in a semi-acoustic trio, I finally learned how to play live-loud and find my place in the mix.

  • Sold Ampeg B2 combo which never cut it for me live
  • Discovered the joys of tubes when I bought an Ampeg V4b. Learned never to let waitress set beverages on it while playing - drink vibrated off and destroyed my footpedal tuner.
  • Made good purchases of an Avatar 210 and 212
  • Sold the 212 in favor of the 210 - love the punch. Looking to buy another 210 or 410 sometime soon.
  • Bought a CertainBass with Varitone - a new adventure. Great bass for gigging.
  • Finally understood I needed to boost mids to cut through blues/classic rock band I joined last January.
  • Craigslist insanity - sold 2 basses, 2 amps, 1 guitar, bought 1 guitar LTD, 1 5-string OLP and an SX short-scale.
  • Playing more aggressively than ever.
Current GAS - while I'm tempted to try an LMll, I'm holding out to see what Traynor comes out with in terms of its new combos early January.

Oh, and you've all taught me many things this past year. Best wishes and appreciation to you all for your experience, technical knowledge, insights, honest mistakes, collegial corrections, interesting opinions and humor.

Let's see: got Q-Tuners into my basses - that's the only real change I've made the past year besides programming better V-Bass patches. Everything's sounding great and kickin' azz so I don't need to change things up : }

But both those changes impact my musical life less probably than getting sobriety would, were I having problems with alcholism or drug abuse. Keep on keepin' on, Sufenta!

Same deal for me too, would never have heard of Bergantino or Bassculture.de, two awesome small companies that have given me two awesome piece of kit that I would never have found anything like elsewhere. Also alot of info regarding how to setup my amp efficiently, and stuff that made me alot less scared of blowing my equipment, but kinda made me alot more scared about some idiot doing in my place.

Right on! However, for purposes of this discussion, I'm limiting the "most improved" title in this thread to gear and playing, as it's hard not to improve upon being an alcoholic or drug addict once you quit. Kind of gives him an unfair leg up, you know? ;)

Even so, I do salute Sufenta and anyone else who had the balls to overcome their demons. It isn't easy.

After a decade spent chasing vintage basses and amps, this year I added some more modern gear into the mix.

- Sadowsky 24/5 + 24/4 w/ big singles
- Bergantino NV610, NV215, and HT112ER
- Markbass F1

They've all been excellent additions. The F1/HT112 is a killer small gig rig, the big Berg cabs are awesome (the 610 SMOKES my early 80s fridge), the Sadowskys are just lovely basses and offer something quite different than my vintage stuff.

I picked up a few pedals this year, never been a pedal guy before. VT Bass, B:Assmaster, Cream Pie, Bassbone. Other than the VT Bass (an "always on" with the F1) I don't know how much use the others will see, but I'm having fun with them.

Hmmm, looks like TB cost me a fair bit of dough this year. I found out about most of this stuff (and bought some of it) here. Um, thanks TB? :D

What a year ...


Went from a concept of a 1x10 cab X 2 (stacked) to a whole series with a NO failures or problems with any of them!

Found that I'm loving two 1x15s stacked for my sound BIGGER.

Did the NAMM show with Bud LeCompte and Fred Hammon and
LOVE my retro Dark Starred ... LeCompte basses.

Totally dialed in my pedal board with no changes in the forseeable future.

Bought my ultimate Jazz Bass for $800.00 (73 Lake Placid Blue) in a Chuck-E-Cheese parking lot :eek:

Have been using my Mark Bass LMII relentlessly but added a Genz 6.0 and like it too, as well as adding a Mesa Buster tube head and a Mesa BB750 ... there are a lot of good heads out there!

Getting back to my P-Bass (sans my pedal board) for some new 09 projects.

Ya know Bass is a cool instrument ... guitar players have no idea what they are missing.


:) ... Oh and a TOTAL revamp of my website for 09 ... Life is GOOD!

Again, thanks for all the nice comments. I really appreciate that. I've been thinking about changing my user name. It is a constant reminder of where I've been and where I am now.

I flipped less gear than I have in many years. Starting to get dialed in ... finally :)

Particularly on amps, I'm just very happy with my Mesa heads and my various 12" loaded cabs. Its been a while that I've been rocking the Mesas ... the most stable my rig has been in long time.

Nothing changed for me. Yet.


The Hartke LH500 I ordered was back ordered, and now I doubt it will arrive until at least a few weeks into the New Year.

The same for the Ashdown MAG115 Cab...


So...yeah. This year nothing, but next year kicks off with a bang!


Oh, and I discovered that I need a EBMM Stingray at some point in this lifetime. Maybe.

This year I joined a band and played out. It's been fun. I have been happy with my amp and bass choices. I built a kickback stand with wheels for my combo amp and started a Bill Fitzmaurice subwoofer as an extension cabinet for large gigs (my carpenter friend with all the tools is very busy -- maybe next month we'll finish it). A new service started at church and I've really enjoyed playing that every week. Between this site and Bill's I've learned a ton on sound, amps and PA's, not to mention musical styles and techniques.
