Big E Speakers Part 4 - Quadraphenia

My straight-in reference is a Walkabout, and I was surprised how much I didnt miss it when I brought the powered board to its initial gig. I attribute most of that to the Tonehammer, but also, the little Stewarts are punchy and arent lacking in anything tonewise. Maybe Ill try an A/B

I will say, I noticed it much more when I stepped up to the Sonic Farm 2Di4 as the front end of my rig. I dont know if that speaks to the Sonic Farms transparency, or is an input impedance thing, or what. The best pedalboard results I've had is running the board through the Puma's FX loop, allowing me to plug straight in to the amp and send a buffered line to the pedalboard and back. I'm aware of several reasons why this is 'not ideal' and yet it definitely yields the most toneful results. Go figure.

Hope you'll all forgive me duplicating my post from the Sonic Farm/MAS amp thread:

Got off the phone with Mike about half an hour ago (called him about something else before NAMM and he got back to me on the drive back). Sounds like the Tantra and the cabs were both big hits at NAMM and caught the attention of lots of the right people. Very glad to see the amp and the cab get some wider exposure and I hope that it translates to big success for all involved.

More on the MAS109... I auditioned with a band last night. Turns out these cats like to play LOUD (too loud, IMO, for rehearsal purposes, but whatever). Great players, which made it worthwhile. That plus etymotics :D Hard hitting drummer, loud guitarist with a 100 watt Mesa and 412 cab...
That little 1 10 cab totally kept up, providing thunderous full lows, sounded great. Wow.
I remember a time (long, long ago, when dinosaurs and 410's ruled the earth) when I would avoid notes below the low D on my 5'ers because they just didn't have the same presence and fullness that other notes had... No more! And all this with one bitty 10" speaker (yeah, plus a mid... ).
Wow. And wow again.

The MAS109 really does kick out some seriously nice low end. I was amazed how well it could keep up.

Also, I let a buddy borrow it, who plays 80% upright through an Iamp600 and a pair of VL110's, and he couldn't believe how open and un-boxy the 109 sounded with his setup. A listener said, "wow, it sounds like a very loud double bass". Thats been my experience as well, the MAS cabs make other cabs sound boxy and 2D.

I can imagine that a pair of MAS109's would just be killin.

Mike was right as usual, getting the new 109 up on a stand really opens up the sound of the cab. It sounded reaaaally great today at a coffee shop solo gig. I am impressed by how good it can sound at low AND high volume settings. Very cool.

What stand are you using there, Jake? I notice that it allows the cab to be level. Is it sturdy enough and stable enough that you'd feel comfortable stacking two cabs on it? Thinking of trying the 46/110 stack that way -- maybe even the Flex Mod, though that seems a lot to trust to one stand unless it's pretty sturdy.

It works very well and has adjustable tilt which is nice. I'd be a little leery put a full flex mod setup on the stand, it tends to wobble a little with weight. I put my pair of EA VL110's on this stand and it was a bit wobbly for my comfort.

What I'd recommend is something like this: WS-540 - Quiklok - Professional Music Equipment and Accessories

Much more sturdy with that amount of weight, just not as adjustable.

Great sounds coming from this setup. I did a good deal more Ab'ing over the weekend and really both rigs (flex plus sub and 109 plus sub) sound terrific, albeit different versions of the effortless MAS tone delivery.

I'll try to post some more detailed thoughts when I get a chance

Thanks, guys. Had a look at the Quiklok (spelling reminds me of Dethklok) site and it looks like the WS-540 is the stand to beat. 24.25" minimum height is higher than I was looking for, actually, but will try to mock that up at home and see what it looks like. Appreciated!
