Big E Speakers Part 4 - Quadraphenia

I read some threads unrelated to BigE that recommended sine wave and I have done that with some cabs but a regular poster named Ken (unk moniker) who used to do video's of Don Oatman's cabs said modern Eminence etc speakers need no fancy break in. He recommended going straight to the gig! Maybe Leland will check in on this?

I had one of the first 210 Flex cabs. I don't have any of the amps that I used with that cab anymore, and its been a bit so I can't give a direct comparison. From my recollection I would say that the Bodai (pair) is slightly warmer and more polite than the flex (210), with possibly just a bit bigger bottom. The Bodai is more refined in its integration of the mids and highs with the lows. The Flex could cover a ton of ground by flipping switches. The Bodai is neutral, so you have to eq in anything extra that you want. The Flex worked well with several different amps. I have only tried 2 with the Bodai. The EBS Reidmar 750 (which was phenomenal this my Eminence loaded MAS112) just left me lacking with the Bodai 110. I then moved to the Mesa D800+ and its powerful eq and other tonal shaping features matched up beautifully. Interestingly, my preferred eq settings changed with the addition of the second cab. I ended up using much more of the voicing control, raising the high mid eq point, and adding a touch of treble. I also raised the HPF a bit. The notes absolutely pop right out. The individual notes ring out beautifully in chords. The cabs are easy to manage as well.

I plugged in my pedals yesterday and was pleasantly surprised. I use an Empress Compressor followed by A DarkGlass B7K Deluxe for pick playing, and a VMT Deluxe for finger Style. This combo gives me the absolute best overdriven tone I have ever had. I recall the 210 flex still being the most "3D" in presentation, but I am going to experiment with cab placement in the future. I am perfectly content with this rig. That said, the Bodai pair was not inexpensive. If you are looking for a single cab solution, Bang for the Buck is gonna go to one of the second hand 210 flexs in the classifieds. The MAS 112 with the Eminence is still my fav single cab, but this pair is a cut above.

Hey just a heads up regarding my 46 cab . I'm in Pittsburgh and going to put it up for sale. I've never used it , so it's pristine. I have 2 16's that I'm using all the time . I've bought a new pup after Charlie's passing and need the cash . Meet Lucy ! She a French bullie, my first I've always been a pug guy.

Hi Lucy, you little cutie! I'm sure she will help ease the grief over Charlie's passing. I mourned my previous cat (Kelsey) for months before I was even ready to think about adopting another. You don't realize how attached you are until they are no longer there. :( Proof of what a sweet kitty she was - she passed away on Valentine's day...

@Mark Sacchetti, I'll echo everyone else's condolences -- hard to lose a beloved pet -- and the sentiment that Lucy's a cutie. She and the camera obviously have an early affinity for each other.

I got to visit @thumbs&fingers and Mike a few weeks ago when I was up in the Chicago area. Between the two of them and thanks to their hospitality, I got to play through the big 48 and the Bodai 112 and 115 (at thumbs's place) and the Bodai 110 and the new MAS 18 (singly and two stacked) at Mike's. (I also brought my Hathor/MAS 110 sub mini-stack on both visits.) I'm running out now but I'll come back and post some impressions here (I've been remiss in not posting them earlier) before too long!

P.S. Not MAS-related, but I got to play an Ampeg B-15 (and go into a "real" recording studio) for the first time last week -- I honestly wasn't sure how I'd like it, but that is a magic little amp. :)

Tom, you should really treat yourself to some nice gear instead of the schlubb stuff you have to play through :D :D :D
