Big E Speakers Part 4 - Quadraphenia

Owning a 110 Flex, I’ve personally haven’t noticed it lacking in the mids. Can this be described more?

The Bodai 110 looks like another winner in the MAS lineup.

After reading it twice (and as a Flex owner) I suspect he meant "I've been missing since I got rid of my 210 Flex".
I'm curious to know what he really meant.
And that purple Bodai is hawt!

Sorry for the confusion. The MAS109 has a solid mid presence. But there is something special about the 'vortex loaded' mid range drivers. I first experienced this feeling when I owned a 210 flex, which still to this day has the best mid range response I've ever heard in a cab. The Bodai brings back that feeling. It is so clear across the frequency spectrum. Especially when doing chordal work. I found the 109 to get a bit muddy sometimes when throwing complex harmonies at it, the Bodai is super transparent.

My Flex 110 is gorgeous throughout its spectrum, mid range included! I'd once again like to reiterate that I love mixing it with my MAS 18 also.

Been rocking the Bodai 110 now for about a month. This thing is everything I had hoped it would be. It has the deep and clear low end of the MAS 109, but the punchy and present mid range I have been missing since I sold my 210 flex! Unbelievably loud as well. I didn't think a single 10 inch woofer could get louder than the 109, but Mike found a way. The presence in the highs is the perfect amount. Just enough to accurately represent my fuzzes, slap sound, and that bit of 'air' on top, but lacking all the shrill top end that can be present with cheap compression drivers. Also the dispersion of the mids and highs is really quite incredible. My Dingwall's low B is house rattling when pushing this cab. Only thing I could want more from my sound is to have 2 of these bad boys down the road for bigger gigs! :bassist::bassist::bassist: Also, I'd forgotten how much I missed having a purple cab. Haha.

Dingwalls and MAS cabs combine wonderfully. They float my boat every time.

Hey guys, a question for ya. I'm looking into new cabs but play mostly precision basses, mostly flats, and low watt tube amps. I'm a fan of 210 cabs and started looking into the MAS 210 Flex cab. This seems like a pretty hi-fi setup, but wonder if it'd be good for big, fat, chewy, pbass lines with flats? Just curious as to you guys' opinions.

Turn off the tweeter and crank it. The most glorious precision tone you ever heard in your life will surround you. I usually drive my 110 Flex+sub with a Reeves C225 (your big tube amp will fit nicely on a Flex). I never tire of how good the combination makes me sound.

I recently put an Alnico V Nordstrand NP-4a in my favorite precision and it sounds glorious through the rig (with SS rounds and the tweeter on)!

I occasionally get in the mood for some flat-wounds - I liked the LaBella tapes it's wearing in this pic, but I really like Dunlop flats on this bass. :D

+1 the Flex 210 with the tweeters off is fantastic for chewy P bass tone. I say this from personal experience. Depending on the amp, the mid/dark switch can be helpful in pocketing the midrange as well. Its an amazing cab setup, and thats one of the things it does REAL well.

Got to have a jam session last night with my old band. D800+ and a single Bodai 110 performed flawlessly. The guitarist had just came from a wedding gig and didn’t have amps, so they ran their pedals direct into each channel of my RMX 1450. One used the BNA 1822 the other my second Bodai 110. Both sounded great, but the Bodai blew me away. He was playing a Tele though a line 6 Floor pod, and the depth of the delays and choruses were insane. It was probably the best tone I have ever heard him have.

SHHH! Don't tell the guitar players about The VORTEX!

So after talking to a very respected TB'er about this whole issue last night, I feel the need to post something about this deal. I actually wasn't going to post anything because I really hate forum fights and negative posts, but he said you have to post something because I would want to know if I were getting ready to order a cab from this company and I would feel like I owe it to folks deciding to purchase after me. So I'm going to attempt to be objective about this even though I feel like I got screwed over several times in this 1 deal! It actually came to the point of me just calling my credit card company and reporting the whole deal and they pulled the money back. I'm pretty sure they're checking in with this company to make sure he never shipped me anything. He actually finally sent me a pic of my cab going 6 weeks into the build process...shown below.

I spoke to Mike Arnopol back in September about getting a Bodai cab. I was actually going to order a Bodai 112 or possible a Bodai 110. Turns out he tells me they have this new Bodai cab that's better than those and uses 8" speakers. He told me you can get a dual 8", or a triple 8" called the 38. I had not heard of these cabs or seen anything about them. He sent me to his Facebook page to see it. He said he'd custom ordered a bunch of the 8" speakers and had them in his shop ready to go. He told me he had a couple of the cab boxes about ready to be assembled and that shipping to St. Louis was about 1 day so after putting it together, I'd get the cab in 1 week. This was on a Thursday. I think I called him back Friday and actually paid for the cab during that weekend. I called him on Monday just to make sure he got the payment because I didn't get a response from him that the money was there and we were all good to go. I didn't ask any other questions. He responded, we will get this cab to you in a week. Ok, that was 6 weeks ago this weekend that I made the payment.

Anyway, when I ordered I was extremely excited to be getting this cab but didn't want to get too elated so I tried to forget about the order. Helps me to forget it and then look for the FedEx or UPS email that something is coming! A lot of folks know me on this forum and I buy so many basses and so many cabs every year so I have it all down to a science! Well over 3 weeks pass and not a word on anything! I called Mike 3 weeks and 2 days into the deal and didn't hear anything, so I post a message in this thread that I can't wait to get the cab. That day, I get a lot of pm's from TB'ers saying let me know how it is! Let me know what you think! Well 1 of the pm's comes from a guy saying he'd ordered the same cab but was having problems getting it. I didn't know him at all as he's not one of the TB regulars here. Turns out he ordered his cab 4 or 5 days after I'd placed my order but got the upgraded tweeter option. I just bought the standard black Bodai 38, no upgrades. Both of us had paid for the cabs in full! Anyway, He started pm'ing me just about every other day saying he'd called and wasn't getting call backs or anything. Well I'd just called and left a message for Mike and didn't get a call at all and that was actually the reason for the initial post, but I didn't leave details about the issue at that point! I had waited over 3 weeks thinking I'd give him some time to get it done even though it's already beyond his 1 week promise date! I'm still thinking I'm going to get a great cab very soon!

The other TB'er starts to get extremely worried so I tell him Mike has been around for a good while and that he'd definitely get a great cab! I think this sort of helped because it seemed like he was thinking he'd been scammed. I was feeling the bad treatment too, but not at the point of thinking I'm getting scammed. Another week passes with no return call from Mike. I call Mike the next week and leave a message.... He does not return a phone call again. At this point, it's beyond 4 weeks after the payment and there's been no contact with Mike at all, just me leaving messages! I get a message from the other TB'er asking what's going on as he's getting the same treatment! At this point, I'm like I don't know... he's ignored my calls and hasn't returned my calls either.... I had no idea this would happen. I call the next week and finally get Mike on the phone (it's a Wednesday of the next week) and he promises me a cab for sure by Monday/ Tuesday of the next week. Well Monday/ Tuesday passes...NO CALL, NO SHIPMENT, NOT A DAMN thing! It's well over a month at this point! Keep in mind, we were both promised cabs in ONE WEEK! So the other TB'er texts him an ultimatum that he wants to cancel the order early this week. I decide to call Mike and he promises he will ship my cab Friday (this is 2 days from the date we're talking)! Fast forward 1 day to Thursday night and I get a pm that the other TB'er gets a rushed cab delivery but it's not 100% what he ordered. Some mounting option seems to be missing or something? It looks like a Bodai 38 though. So this feels like KICK IN THE FACE #5 that the other TB'er gets his cab first and I ordered 4 or 5 days before him. My cab has not shipped and it's a simpler design without the extra tweeter! I'm like this is UNREAL! I'm just watching this whole TRAIN WRECK play out in slow motion!

That whole evening, I'm furious that cabs have shipped before mine that were ordered after mine! I confirmed 100% that the other Bodai 38 was one, but I heard about others but couldn't confirm those so I'm just sticking to the other 38 cab. I sit down and think about all of this that's happened, and deep down I know Mike has told me another lie and that this cab is not shipping Friday! We are just a couple of days shy of 6 weeks at this point! I decide that night that I'm ending this TRAIN WRECK instantly and not fighting this out with him or Paypal, so I called and issued full statements on the whole transaction history to my credit card agency. I've never had to file a credit card dispute and I buy A LOT from MANY people! Look at my TB'er Feedback! I've had many excellent deals but also some sour deals with people where I ate time and money to make situations right when problems came up! I have always bent over backwards to make things go right if ever there were any issues! This really was a last resort after all the problems, and lies, and just frankly coming to the point of saying I really like his cabinets and designs, but I'm at the breaking point and will NEVER EVER buy anything, not even a $5 cab wheel from Mike or his company. He is not to be trusted at all! I have not added all the stories and lies I've been told in the last 2 days in this message!

So to end this long post, I finally got my FIRST phone call from Mike yesterday...actually MANY OF THEM in a row after he realized that Paypal pulled all the funds back from this transaction! His whole frustration in the messages I got from him were that he couldn't afford to lose the money on the deal! Now I run a business and cater to customers and see a huge problem with his whole approach to this. His concern was for money in his account being returned on an item he has not shipped for going on 6 weeks. He had not shipped me anything but he feels that he's lost something and has been wronged. He had 6 weeks to ship me something, and that's 5 weeks longer than the 1 week he promised when he told me he had the cab in his shop almost built and the woofers, in stock, also in his shop when I ordered! I texted him back all of my problems with the last 6 weeks and that he'd lost nothing but a sale! I have gotten my money back and you have not shipped me a thing, so we are even! It's definitely a huge failure on an Opportunity for him! In some of the many texts yesterday, he says that he's going to finish the cab next week and have it shipped next Tuesday (trying to make another promise #5 that's so easily broken) and that he'll get his money back from Paypal. I told him the deal was fried and not to ship me anything! There's no way to continue this deal! I ended it this way on purpose! If you ship a cab this way, you are doing so against my will, and I've informed you that the money was returned to me. I'm not going to ship anything back in the highly likely event that you never get the funds back from Paypal! In all the texts yesterday, he decides to send me a picture of the cab he said again that he's working on. This is what he described having ready over the phone the first week I ordered the cabinet when he said the cab is almost built and the woofers are in the shop ready to be installed. There's such a huge discrepancy in what was promised here to the point that I believe Mike has a serious problem.

Mike had the audacity to send me this photo yesterday of a cab promised over 5 weeks ago...

I actually have cut this post down and will say I honestly don't know the details of why this has transpired like this on Mike's end. It's the weirdest, most condescending deal I've had from any company or anyone! There's absolutely no professionalism here and no ethics so deal with him very carefully, if at all! He even brought Duke into this whole thing yesterday saying Duke ships cabs 12 weeks late and that he does better than Duke so I should be happy to deal with him! I told him I actually ordered from Duke 2 years ago and it was 2 days late and that Duke called me apologizing for the 2 days late shipment and he did other things to make up for the 2 days that I won't mention here! He supposedly actually called Duke to verify my purchase. I had told him I buy many, many cabs and gear so not sure why the verification was needed. I typically remember deals with people especially if something happened out of the ordinary both good and bad. Sorry about this long post...I was really looking forward to a great cab (Mike does build an awesome cab) but I can't stand by with this kind of customer treatment! If this is a "one-off" bad experience and you guys have had better dealings, please share your experiences.

Here's Mike's story on his FB page (link below)....
He says he needs a "vetting process"

The concern here is that he won't get better at customer service issues if he says it's all the customer's fault. You have to take responsibility for how your business operates (both successes and failures) to move it forward!

I went to him because I wanted a great cabinet! I paid him for it. I delivered everything on my end. The horrific process later led to this loss of a sale! He's not concerned with how this product delivery process was presented at all. He's hurt about his negative Paypal balance. What about pleasing the customer first? You won't have a negative Paypal balance if you please the customer!

Sorry to read your experience was unsatisfactory. I was an early adopter, buying the 1st 48 then the 46 from Mike. Both arrived as expected. I see his facebook post mentions being sick. Your points about communication etc. are well made. I believe he is still a one man operation and this could be an issue when illness strikes. The cabs are great. Maybe watch the classifieds for a used one. I got a great price on a 210 flex from TB and passed it on to a local later. Best of luck.

Alphaman, I'm sorry that you feel that you have been taken unfair advantage of. We all probably would like to pay for something and instantly have the product in our hand. Unfortunately, often times I have had to wait for over a year for a product to be delivered by a big company, I won't mention G/K's name. You were dealing with a very small company that depends on the suppliers he uses, his own personal health, and things like flooding in his work space. Sometimes there are delays caused Mike's continuous quest to improve his product, in this case waiting to send you the latest versions of his driver. It is true there was a mistake made by switching the orders, but we are all human and we all make mistakes. Small custom builders often take much longer than the original estimate to deliver a product. These cabinets are built one at a time to order and are many times more complicated than anything else out there. I do repairs and make custom instruments and sometimes have gotten so far behind in a project and repeatedly missed deadlines, often through no fault of my own, that communication with a customer becomes difficult, but my customers know I will come through in the end. I'm sure that most people that have dealt with Mike will agree that is true of him. I know you feel you were "screwed over", but if mistakes were made, I can personally attest that nothing was done purposely to take advantage of you. I feel bad for you that because you were impatient and saw fit to get angry with someone who would have delivered your order in a couple of days you won't be able to experience these amazing cabinets.

Just so we have both sides of the story, here is Mike's side:

"...A customer ordered a 38 special and I was late on delivery. (forget the fact that it's a new model and I waited until I got the new drivers--I wanted to make the 38 as "special" as I could--an honest 4 ohm cab rather than 6 ohms. And the newest driver has crazy excursion--and I couldn't work because I was really sick). I talked to him yesterday and said that I would ship Monday or Tuesday. He was fine with it. He then found out that I had shipped the same model to a guy that ordered his 4 days later. My mistake---but that cab shipped on Thursday and his would ship on Monday. Well---I wake up to find out my Paypal is in the negative numbers. He was so mad that the other guy got his first that he put in a dispute with Paypal.

So------in order to buy plywood and drivers I'll sell a brand new 38 (I'm putiing the drivers in tonight) for $1250 shipped.($70 savings)It's my fav of my cabs. I can ship on tuesday..

He said "hey, I buy 10 bass cabs a year". And likely sells 10 a year. I think I need a vetting process.

This guy just posted some of the most slanderous stuff that I have ever experienced on TalkBass. He misrepresented everything I had said. His cab is 3 weeks later than promised. And the main reason I was late was that I had an idea for a new driver that would bring the 38 from a 6 ohm to a true 4 ohm cab. It'll get 25% more power from the amp. I had ordered 50 of them, but they won't arrive for 2 weeks. I asked Eminence if they could do me a favor and make 3 of them so that this cab would have them and I could get it out ASAP. And he lied and said that I had said that Duke's lead times were much longer and that he should be happy that he getting his in 6! He also said that I called Duke up just to check on his history. I was just talking to Duke about crossovers and mentioned the guy and Duke looked up the transaction. Duke said "wow! I was only 2 days late!. I quote an 8 to 12 week lead time and I usually get them out in 12." My point was that many guys have longer lead times and I try to keep them as short as possible....

....This really hurts my business a lot. A guy that might be considering a cab is going to think twice. I'm really sick of this business----it's the wealthy hobbyists that are a majority of the TB crowd. Most pros won't even look at it. They buy stuff and sell it a week later....

...but the stress that these guys cause is just literally getting me ill. It ain't worth it. Anyone want to buy a speaker biz? ..."

These small time builders are usually one man shops just trying to make a living. Sometimes stuff happens. Mike has been on here for a LONG time and is a great asset to the community. It is a shame that the talkbass community rallies behind a SINGLE negative story so quickly, and not they guy who has been an active member of the community for so long. I don't agree with the personal public slandering on either side, so I cut that out.

I have no affiliation with MAS, or anyone else for that matter. I just see too many knowledgeable members get burned on here by the much less experienced users. They get beat-up, chewed up, and spit out.

This was not a Dr.Bass situation, and should not be dealt with as such.

Mike, unfortunately, is unable to post on here at this time because of a commercial user issue with admin.

If we want support from the after market vendors on here, we need to treat them with respect. If we want to know the truth about how speakers work and want help, then we need to support the knowledgeable members, not tear them down.

The major manufacturuers never have, and probably never will log on here to talk bass cabs, let alone listen to our requests or work with us to design new equipment. We should treat these small boutique builders as a treasure.

I believe there's a misunderstanding of my issues here... I have no problem waiting on gear to be made. I have been waiting almost a year for a Wyn bass to be built. The builder was honest and upfront that it would take about a year. I paid the money for it and have been patiently waiting since sending the funds in January. The bass will be ready sometime next month. The difference here is that I didn't get different stories on timelines and broken promises every time I had a conversation with the builder. That leads to unsatisfaction.

I still can't grasp how you can promise a cab in 1 week and still not be remotely done in 6 weeks especially if you say all the materials are in your shop and the cab is basically assembled. Something doesn't line up with even the first story. But ok, if that was a mistake, fine... I didn't even attempt to call Mike for 3 weeks giving him the benefit of the doubt that I would eventually get the cab a little later than expected. When we talked next, going on a month after purchase, the cab was again promised the very next week and that fell through! Then it was promised by Friday of the same week and that was falling through based on the cab photo I was finally sent the day before the 3rd promise date! You can't do that to your customers and expect them to be happy. What do you call this? OK, so I'm already unhappy with all of this, then you rush a cab out to someone who has ordered the same cab I ordered after I'd ordered first...and that's another mistake? There are too many "mistakes" here.

Thank you for this eloquent post. I could not have stated my feelings on this incident half as well. Your last sentence stated one of my feelings exactly: "I feel bad for you that because you were impatient and saw fit to get angry with someone who would have delivered your order in a couple of days you won't be able to experience these amazing cabinets.". I am not and never will be a 'pro player', but I take my playing seriously. There are simply no other cabinets available like Mike's and I do hope that he gets past this bump in the road and continues following his passion to make these unique musical instruments thinly disguised as bass cabinets.

No one brought Dr. Bass into this. That's a different situation entirely that I'm glad I was never a part of. I do not believe Mike was attempting to steal money. I also had no idea Mike could not post in this thread when I made the original posting about the issues. I expected him to come and give his story. I even posted a link to Mike's FB page so folks could see his side of the story!

Mike builds great cabs and I said that in my post. That's the reason I ordered from him. I think he makes a great product. I own a few of his cabinets. I completely disagree with how I've been treated as a customer so much that I had to take drastic measures to end the avalanche of a deal. The posts about Duke, etc....all came from him. I had no reason to bring Duke into this as my problem was not with Duke. I can only think this possibly came up as a way to "shed the issue" I was discussing with him. I had great service from Duke when I ordered.

Like I said, I ordered this cab sight unseen because I knew it would be a good cab. I just didn't sign up for the roller coaster ride I got to get it. It was time to get off that ride before it went back up again. There are probably stories where there were great dealings with him so I asked people to post if they had something "concrete" to share.

This is the first time I'm seeing or hearing anything about this driver change and his request to have 3 sent out to satisfy my order. I don't know how much of this was actually at play during the whole process because his story keeps changing... When I first talked to Mike, I called to order a Bodai 10 or Bodai 12. I didn't even know he was making them with 8" speakers. He sold me on the cab with the 8's and said he had a large shipment of custom 8" drivers in his shop as we spoke. He said he'd assembled some and they sounded better than the 10's and 12's. He suggested I go with the 8's because they sounded good and he had the drivers in stock! I don't forget conversations much at all, but all of his later stories don't match anything he told me in our first few phone calls. Every phone call we had was a different story which is why I lost faith in him. I don't want to believe it was deliberate but his stories were consistently different. It set a pattern for me that I don't want to deal with!

His cab is 3 weeks later than promised
This is definitely a lie. I was told 1 week before I paid for the cab. I paid for the cab and called Mike the next day to make sure he received the payment. He said you will get the cab in 1 week again in our 2nd conversation. Even after missing the date again later, he promised the next week and so on. All of those dates were missed. None of this driver change stuff was communicated and should've been since I'd been told when placing the order that all the drivers were in stock and the cab box was built.
