Big E Speakers Part 4 - Quadraphenia

Hey all. I’m just getting into trying some MAS cabs. I have a 45 coming (with the 5” and 4 tweeters). I’ll be using a Mesa D800.

I’m going for something very articulate that fits a six string Fodera well. Think lots of chords, full range tone desired from low B to high C. Like a good home audio quality speaker. Coffee shop and home practice use. For big gigs I’m 100 percent DI through a Nobel or Monique.

The 45 is mentioned for double bass. Is the 46 similar, potentially a better fit? In any case really looking to try this 45.

As I recall, the 45 is a KILLER DB cab, and can do beautifully for ERB when paired with the 110 sub.
The 46 is a great ERB cab. There are a couple of "further evolution" cabs (going from the Flex, through the MAS109's and 112's, to the newer Bodai) that are amazing. If you can find someone nearby (or make the trip to Chicago) you can find the best cab for you.

I bit the bullet and ordered a Bodai 28 today. Steve was super helpful and knowledgeable and confirmed this is a best fit. I will use this for a big church weekly gig (around 2000 seat ampetheater) and also for this new solo jazz standards concept I have in addition to smooth jazz gigs with bands. Some of the small coffee shops in town are always asking if I’m interested to play after doing some jazz trio stuff at their venues. I have a new fodera 6 custom coming and always wanted to do some solo jazz sets on 6. Arranging and Practicing solo, bass and comp parts really helps me as a musician imo. I’ve started to play with arrangements aka Todd Johnson style who I really dig his playing. So I’m thinking this bodai 28 for that clear jazz guitar like clarity and also possessing full bass tone as well.

I saw in earlier posts there may have been some growing pains in the experience with the first 38 models. I’m hopeful to get one now that’s all dialed in! Fingers crossed!

Cab looks killer from pic!

Coffee shops to a 2000 seat amphitheatre (with/without PA?) is quite a range, though just how big would depend on the acoustics, style, and volume of the music.

I talked with Mike a couple of weeks ago and asked him about the state of the 38 (and 28) cabs. There was a specific sonic issue with one of the 38s (not the one @golfnsubie posted about enjoying a little ways up). He was confident that he knew the exact cause and that it was something simple to address. I would expect your 28 to arrive all grown-up.

Hope it - and the solo jazz arrangements - works out well for you! Please do report back after you've had some time with it in the different settings you mentioned.

Thanks mark. Yes for sure, the big church is DI to PA. I use a Nobel pre with a Mesa D800. However instead of in ears I like a cab as a monitor (at the dislike of the band director! :)). Even though drum set enclosed, I still need a nice tight and clear cab that won’t interfere/bleed into other musicians sonic space (or risk forced being in ear). and think at 44lbs the Bodai 28 should be perfect and the way it’s said to project the mids and highs. The main PA is a Massive array, so I wouldn’t expect the Bodai to compete with it for sure!

I like to just keep my cab in the car all the time it’s not in use, so measurements look nice to just keep in trunk.

Look forward to giving a full gig report. This summer I’ll do some summer outdoor festival smooth jazz gigs and I typically use a berg 410 without PA on. That will be the test for sure!

Glad to hear the issue was resolved with the 38- thanks for the feedback. I’m sellng/sold all my other speakers to put all cards on MAS from the good experience I hear from other musicians. So fingers crossed!

I'm REALLY looking forward to hearing your impressions of the Bodai 28. It's the only other cabinet that has my interest outside of my Bergantino REF series cabs. The 28 just seems like an awesome "one cab" solution. Lighter than my previous MAS 112 cab, smaller footprint, similar output capability, Mike's most developed cabinet and crossover system...what's not to like?
The 28 would no doubt be my cab of choice from Mike these days.

I've found that the MAS cabs project better/more clearly than out into the house -- if someone is looking not to hear any bass, they might. On the other hand, I've found that the sound plays better/fights less with the PA (and with other musicians' cabs) than is often the case with a conventional cab of similar output and that, because it is more clear (and, if I have to carry the house, too, because it carries better), I don't have to crank quite as loud to be heard and to hear myself.

On another note, I'd started leaving a small cab in the car for jams, etc., but I'm not now -- it's been bitterly cold around here and I recently read some tales on TB of cold driver surrounds cracking or tearing when people plugged in and played. I don't think I've ever witnessed that -- maybe the risk is exaggerated -- there were plenty of people in the thread who said as much -- but it spooked me enough to stop, at least until I know better for sure. (I guess the car speakers are out in the cold all the time...) Anyway, if you do bring it in from the cold, it won't hurt give it a little while to warm up before plugging in. Others might have a different perspective on this.

I've never used in-ears, but I vastly prefer hearing things in "open air" to hearing them through headphones, so I'm not sure how I'd like them.

Good luck with the cab and with the gigs, big and small!

Hey MarkA, I frequently use Berg AE 212/112s or sometimes the older ceramic EX112s. The majority of my current gigs require a 212 of some kind. My question is, it sounds like you're saying the MAS 112 would cover those same gigs volume wise? Is that correct? If so, I'm guessing the 38 would as well but the 28 would not, would that be a reasonable estimation?
Hey, Kirk.

In terms of output and staying dynamic at volume, I'm confident that my MAS 112 will hang with or beat any 2x12 or any two 1x12s I've heard -- this includes, in no particular order, various flavors of Epifani, Markbass, GK, Aguilar, Ampeg, Glockenklang, Genz Benz, etc. I'm not so familiar with your Bergantino cabs -- I've only ever played a few Bergs in stores; the one I recall most clearly is the CN212, which struck me as nicely voiced and clear, but less impactful/authoritative than my MAS 112. That's just in a store, though. I've been told that the HD cabs are more "stout" in that regard.

The Bodai 112 should have output in the same ballpark as the MAS 112. Rule of thumb with the MAS cabs is output equal in volume to that of a conventional ported cab with two of the same drivers -- for the Bodai 112, that would be output similar to that of a "super" 212 with Kappalite woofers.

The 38 should be able to go louder -- and would, I believe, be a couple of dB more efficient -- than the 112. (38 is listed at 101 dB, 28 at 98.5 dB -- didn't see a sensitivity spec for the 112, but I believe it's in the same ballpark as the 28). That might or might not be a factor, depending on the amp you're using.

Mike has described the 28 as being "between the 110 and the 112 in output, but closer to the 112," so, in terms of your query, I dunno. The Vd given for the 28 on Mike's site is pretty close to that of the 112, but the voicing (per conversation with Mike and extrapolating from my experience with the MAS 18s) is different -- more deep extension and more flat than the 112, which is more aggressive.

I haven't heard a Bodai 28 or 38 (I have played through the Bodai 110, 112, and 115, though only got to crank on the 110). My very subjective impression of playing through the two MAS 18s stacked at Mike's place (closest I've experienced to the Bodai 28) was that they were big-sounding and deep (deeper than my MAS 112 or the Bodai 112) with crazy B-string control, but that my 112 would probably go a bit louder and hit a little harder if push came to shove. My 112 feels a little "bigger" to me. Hard to say, though. I did not play them next to each other or max out the two 18s.

If you're covering a gig with two of your current twelves, I'm confident that a MAS/Bodai 112 could cover it. The 38 should cover it easily. If you're pushing your current cabs, I suspect you'd be flirting with the limits of the 28, but I'm not familiar enough with your cabs or with the 28 to say so with certainty. You'd be better off asking Mike about that.

The Bodai 28, 38, and 112 are, I believe, all 4 Ohm cabs. I would guess that the 112 would be closer to the voicing of your current cabs, but I suspect that they'd all be different enough to require some familiarization/figuring out EQ time.

There is a Bodai 112 in the classifieds right now.

For myself, I can see the 112, 28, 38, or one or two 110s each making sense -- which one makes the most sense would depend on the circumstances. The 28 is tempting because of its size and because it seems like it would be at home in a big and small venues -- I probably wouldn't take a 38 or a 112 into a coffeeshop (it'd have to be a pretty rockin' coffeeshop), but I might take a 28 -- seems less threatening somehow. (It's a bass player! Run!) If I were consistently playing louder stuff, though, and wanted one cab to cover it all, I'd rather err on the side of having more than I need.

Perhaps @golfnsubie can offer some perspective (re. the 38). Talk to Mike, though -- see what he says.

Good luck! And Happy New Year.

The real problem is, I've been following you guys here for a Looooong time without ever having the pleasure of hearing one live in the flesh, so to speak. Due to living in here in Oregon. I'm hoping to remedy that sometime soon. I plan to get down to the Bay Area soon chase down some of the South Bay guys that post on this thread. I'm lookin at you SC guys, Kesslari and mntngrown!
I had to save for over a year to replace my truck and now that is done, some new speakers are my next target. I'm hoping to get down to there in the next month or two.

Hey MarkA, thanks for the detailed response. I'm using a Minimega 1000. Sometimes a Shuttlemax 12.

Sure, Kirk. Sorry I couldn't tell you anything more definite re. the 28, but, without being more familiar with it, your cabs, or what your gigs are like, I'd just be guessing. I'd think it would hang pretty well -- I am considering one for myself -- but just how well relative to the other cabs in question (Mike's and your Bergs), I can't say.

Re. the amps:

The Minimega is a hammer with an extended low end. If I were in doubt about which cab to use with that head, I'd err on the side of the bigger/more robust (and, in the case of the 38, more efficient) one -- the one I'd be stressing less if push came to shove on a loud gig.

I had a Shuttlemax 12.0 for awhile. If you dig the tone and control of it and want to run it into a single cab -- and if you don't ever need to run below 4 Ohms -- I think you'd be happier trading it for a Shuttlemax 9.2 if you can (there are other options -- many among the current micros -- but that would be the most "straight across" trade). I might be in the minority on TB but, even at 4 Ohms, I was never entirely happy running my 12.0 into a single cab (and, to be fair, that's not what the amp was optimized for). Your results might vary, but the 9.2 would have more oomph into a single box and I think that, with the MAS cabs, it would show. (I believe that the 9.2 runs a single ICE 250 ASX2 in the power section and that the 12.0 runs two 125 ASX2 in dual-mono -- non-bridgeable.) If you want to run three (or four) of your 12s, that's a different story -- the 12.0 will do that, the 9.2 won't.

If you dig your 12.0 and it's working well for you, feel free to ignore everything I just said. You can always see how it works with whatever cab(s) you end up with and go from there.

If you're able to make a trip and hang with @kesslari, @mntngrown and company, that would be a good way to get a taste of what the cabs can do. You should bring a couple of your current cabs so that you have a familiar frame of reference.

Congrats on the new truck, by the way! I just put a bigger battery in my car (got tired of the glorified motorcycle battery Honda saw fit to equip it with stranding me in sub-zero temps). That's almost as cool, right?

As far as keeping up with multiple 12's from other co's the second post in this thread is pretty impressive.
For Sale - MAS Bodai 112

That’s my Bodai 112 and it’s a beast. I’m expecting delivery of a 28 this month. Also planning a Bay Area GTG for sometime in February. If the 112 doesn’t sell by then, I’ll have the 112 and the 28 for comparison, along with a pair of AK TC112s

I have actually been running the minimega again with the bodai 38 as of lately(really like muscular it sounds)..medium sized bar last night with gain around 4 the volume knob between 5 and 6 and that was plenty but my cab is a ~6ohm cab(I'm told) ...the figures that Mike posts re the 8 inch driver are that he can coax 460 vd out of each one...so the 28 should be close to hanging with fearless 212s and big twins in theory...i have played my cab(38) in a large party room with lh1000 volume as high as 7 and at that point I was really just trying to make sure I wasn't physically vibrating the room too much...i have also played it in a very small bar where I put the pa mixer right on top of my head, had one cbr10 speaker one acoustic guitar one singer and then my cab...had a great night where we fell into some of the prettiest versions of our songs.....cab felt huge to carry in there but it sits way more petite
My previous cabs were 4×10 and 1×15 gk mbe series and the 38 is much more capable than that stack but less visually imposing
