Big E Speakers Part 4 - Quadraphenia

Hmn...pondering those things...

Whelp, the Baers are good cabs but they don't put out a _lot_ at the bottom end. (Not meaning to imply they're deficient; just saying the lowest register is not their forte.) OTOH, the Pattersons and the Berg have plenty of oomph there, driven by the TH500 in a different room.

Thanks for the clue about boundary cancellation. Found some stuff:

... Mentioning that because we've been working regularly at a little bar (great staff, great patrons) that has vexed me no end, trying to get a good, muscular bass sound. My theory is that there's some wicked comb filtering going on (all reflective surfaces, basically a square floor plan with a 12' ceiling, about 40' + on a side). I've used a variety of very good cabs there, but have never been able to get my tone the way I'd like. Really eager to see how the MAS 112 does there, but we won't be back until next month.
A 40'square room might very well have a cancellation at 28Hz (the tonic of the wavelength) and at 56Hz (the first octave). An additional mode may also be present at 90Hz from the 12'ceiling. The random phase alignment of the mvw should help with this.

Well, that surely would explain my wimpy sound in that room.

Just heard we're going back there on 11/8. Gonna bring the MAS112 along, for sure.

The report following this gig will be interesting!

Mike said the new filter has rendered my 110 Flex more transparent. As long as I can still see it (;)), I am going to set it up on a 19" stand I have rigged. I removed the casters from a rolling cart which is constructed of MDF and used its shelf to stabilize and reinforce it. Mike said that elevation acts like a tone control. It will prevent excessive bass response which is cool as I've been rolling back the bass knob on my Reeves for balance. Looking forward to rocking the rig on Sunday. :D

Any update on when the MAS115/215 will be available and pricing? I just got some cabs via a trade and am working on one more (layaway) but I'd flip them all for one of Mike's creations (anyone with a used 210 Flex for sale - or you're thinking about it, wink wink?)

Given the purported volume the 112 produces I don't feel that it would be an adequate support for my Mesa 400. In my dream scenario, I'd like to throw in a new set of KT88's for their improved low-end and set it atop a 115. Mike said (in the MAS forum) that I could "disarm N. Korea" with that setup.

Thanks for the update Spirit; Mark, you may just need to order a second 12. Say, two 112's side by side would support my Mesa, hmmmm....

We are working on the prototype. It will most likely be a 215 as the cabinet size between a 115 and 215 will be within 30%. This will be a beast of a different color and not for the faint of heart or stature. There are still many things to work out. There is a functioning test mule but nothing that one would call a prototype. We have yet to address the mid/hf section yet. It will be creative. Then we need to run it over to Mike and let him tell us it's the greatest thing yet...then we need to go back to the drawing board and fix all the things he finds wrong with it. The conversation will be, "It's the greatest thing I've ever heard! Now fix it..." :roflmao:
After that we have the supply chain metrics and all the little details that can kill a product... Soooo oooo... I don't expect a product for release until sometime next year. We will be posting updates on this and other products in the usual places as we go.

You guys are going to need to build Mike an anechoic chamber - or underground bunker - if you want to test that thing at volume. That or take it out to a farm somewhere.

Razman, you mean support in the literal sense of "physically hold up," right? Biggest amp I have is a GBE 1200 in a three space rack. I think that'll be okay atop the 112, but we'll see. In terms of volume, I both hope and anticipate that the 112 will go a little louder than my current 212 while remaining clear and dynamic (e.g. in percussive playing). If it does that with similar dispersion to my 66, I figure it'll be enough for me to be clearly heard onstage and in the audience even when things get stupid loud (I'm not a fan of stupid loud, but sometimes I find myself in the middle of it.). I hope a second cab won't be needed!

Ooooh, a 215, just what the doctor ordered! Thank you for the detailed update, Stephen. No rush on my end, that will give me some time to flip some more gear and save up for one, and to have our building reinforced.

It's a non-plus, so no, provided they are matched and spec'd within the bias range they drop right in, boost power by about 50 watts and have better lows (or so says most posts I've read about them.)

You will probably get more clean headroom, but tubes do not boost power. That requires more VA - i.e. a bigger power tranny.

I was going to quip about tube vs. SS watts, that tube watts were more powerful (and lump Trace Elliot watts in there as well) and then run & hide, but I recall one of the best explanations of this phenomenon done by Mr. Reiner himself in the thread about is new amp:

I think it's the "feel" component of a tube poweramp that is what is so appealing - with the lower damping of most tube power sections (compared to SS), you get a nice bass bump around the resonant frequency of the speaker in the box - a SS amp will lack bass in comparison which is why you may want to bump somewhere in the 75 to 80 Hz range to bring back that feel with a typical SS amp. In a tube power amp, the amplifier and speaker are very interactive, and the resonant peaks of the speaker are not critically damped like SS, and as such get amplified. This gives the pleasing qualities to the low and high end that we often associate with tube power. That's why a tube amp plus high-efficiency, low Xmax speakers works so well - the damping component helps compensate for the low end, and the higher efficiency gives you the desired output - like chocolate and peanut butter. It's also why the sealed box works so well with tube amps and is often preferred.

To exploit the best of both worlds, I've been planning on building an amp with a small but robust tube power section driving a proper reactive load and then tapping a signal from that and re-amplifying with SS. That captures the tube feel with SS volume capabilities. The ICE module opens up a lot of possibilities for a fairly compact, integrated unit. In the mean time, it just depends on where your tastes lie - I love tube, SS, and hybrid, so I'm not really skewed one way or another.

It was a light-bulb epiphany for me. Unfortunately, I have to limit my peanut butter intake as it "disagrees" with me. At least I don't need to limit my bass intake.

Not much discussion on the 46 or the new 66. Mike was suggesting I look at the 66, and I know one guy here who uses a stack of 46's.
Any comments on these two cabs for those who do not need the über lows of the MAS109/110 series cabs?
