Big E speakers: Pt 2

This MAS Flex110 was used just yesterday at the mighty and majestic Newburyport, MA, Farmers' Market, a small, quiet gig to be sure, but a gig nonetheless. And this beast caught my bandmates' ears: "The best you've sounded." "It's so even sounding." "I can hear you way on the other side of the stage."

It's a pleasure to play through this thing. It takes equalization well - the VTBass created a most musical fuzz bass (it was always harsh w/ other cabs).

Hats off to Mike and the folks at MAS.

Here is the 45/110 that is headed my way... Shipped today! :bassist:

That looks awesome!

So my 45 is already out of date? :eyebrow: I am curious how that tweeter compares to the domes.

Not out of date at all, just different than mine. The domes are sweeter and less in your face. I wanted more treble presence for slap style playing so I went with the single tweeter. I believe Mike will make them either way.

I'm looking forward to 'hearing' your thoughts on this killer setup. It should be quite a conversation-starter. The Ciare tweets are the best I've ever heard. Enjoy!!!

The eagle has landed!

Unfortunately I had to run to work before much testing could happen BUT early impressions are outstanding... This stack has all the sweetness of the 85 but with added brilliance and nice extra deep lows. This is just what I wanted!

A good example of the clarity: never has the difference between 2 band and 3 band Sting Ray preamps been so clear.

I'm doing the Ciare for guys that play primarily electric.
The domes sound better on upright----but with a small turn of a knob there's not a big difference.

Let me put it this way--
If I were using it for home hifi I'd prefer the domes.
For PA probably the Ciares.

Ultimately the domes are more neutral and the Ciares provide a bit more "bite" without any harshness

This is not helping to shorten the wait Mike! :) Gosh, this looks absolutely smoking!

Do you have sensitivity measures for the various cabs BTW, I've seen 97 dB for the 4x5 somewhere?

This reminded me of a question I had for Mike or others with experience/knowledge about speaker response. Wouldn't adding a second 45 to my current one produce more extension in the lowest frequencies or at least give that impression? I seem to remember reading something about low end production being a function of transducer surface area.

You are extra lucky. How does the switching work on these to choose cross overs or not? Is that the switch on the 110? Then I'd assume the switch on the 45 cuts 2db?

There is only a switch on the 110 which pads the 45 2db. It is a very subtle change. I had a hard time hearing the difference while playing/switching the switch. I left it in the up position which I think is unpadded just cause I wanted all the goodness with no padding.

I tried several different configurations: standard crossed over, full range parallel (both speakers getting full frequencies), plus variations on both running the fdeck hpf v3. It was all excellent!

I like the treble on the amp backed off to about 10:00 and I am loving the sound in all configurations. It has been fun getting out all the basses to truly "hear" them through this setup. I'm still not through all of them but I can definitely echo an earlier post about these cabs magnifying any setup or pickup adjustments needed. I found myself scrambling for my Philips to get my P Bass pickup height set right. And what a reward for doing so: I've never heard *any* P Bass sound just so RIGHT as how mine sounded tonight. And the Sting Rays? Fahgeddaboudit, we have the perfect rig for exploiting that awesome Hi Fi slap tone.

Totally killer. And I'm still mentally processing all this. I need to rest now, I'm feeling some serious sound-induced fatigue.

If there is only a switch on the 110, how do you switch between cross overs?

You don't switch the crossover. For crossed over you wire the amp into the bottom jack of the sub+crossover then out its top jack into the 45. To run both speakers full range you wire the amp into the 45 then into the sub (effectively in parallel). It is very versatile and you get a different sound with each configuration. Also Mike mentioned that decoupling the 45 from the sub by putting it up on the pole will give a different sound as well. So yeah, the sound can really be tailored with all these options plus the pad. And a whole lot more when using an fdeck variable hpf.
