Big Muff?

Does anybody know what the guy from EW used on dopethrone? Whatever he uses, it rattles my speakers like crazy. You know when the bass player is listed as playing both "bass" AND "fuzz bass" in the album notes that you're in for something special...

Everyone says. Boss FZ-2. I am not sure if that is for the bass player or just the guitarist. Either way Behringer makes a clone of it that sells for super cheap.

I think a Deluxe Bass Big Muff might be what you're looking for. I certainly wouldn't recommend a "normal" Big Muff, but since it has a blend function on board, it'll let you dial in the right amount of grit and clean signal so that you're not sacrificing any low end.

I have a Big Muff and also just bought an Idiotbox Blower Box. I don't think a BM is quite what you'd want for a growly, metal bass tone. I'd definitely go Blower Box. They pop up used right around $100 all the time.

Tech 21 VT Bass is good for tube warmth. I have a VT bass on all the time with just a tiny bit of edge and also a Big Muff for full-on distortion. It's a classic pedal at a good price.

Joyo American, Blower Box, and Rat Tail for what you want. Big Muff's are almost always over the top. Which is a good thing. Not what you're looking for.

For Distortion: IdiotBox BlowerBox

For Fuzz: Vick Audio 1 button fuzz, Vick Audio Black Russian, IdiotBox Swanson Super Fuzz, WayHuge Swollen Pickle

If you want OD that can also get hairy, the Joyo American is hard to beat at 30$

+1 on the Blower Box the squeals per dollar are very high

Hugely underated pedal. This was my first pedal ever and you can do a lot of stuff with it as far as fuzz goes. Its dirt cheap and sounds great. You can get the bass big muff, the nano bass big muff, or bass big muff deluxe for under 120 or if you wanna spend more eBay is crawling with the vintage Russian muffs.

I had the Big Muff for about a day... it was fine, but I don;t think it is good for what you are looking for. I got rid of mine because I found it to be too harsh... I think the Aguilar Agro is very good for dialing in the exact amount of dirt you want.

Hi everybody! First post here, but came out of long term lurking to pose a question. Here's the deal: I have the deluxe big muff and absolutely love the tone and style of drive. I really like how it sounds ramped up and giving full on blowout drive, but also like how it can be subtle with the blend knob turned down. Ideally, I'd like to have both sounds accessible, so I am considering running the deluxe for tame drive and adding in the big muff or nano muff after it for full on meltdown mode. Is that something that people do? I'd like to be able to run them both active at once, but before I buy for my experiment, lets consult the groupthink.

I don't see why not. Sounds like a good idea. I don't do it cause I have od taken by other pedals. If you're looking for a smaller type enclosure Vick Audio makes great muff clones. And not too expensive either. I have his Black Russian and it's AWESOME!

The BBM was my 1st fuzz pedal, 7 years ago. Sounded great on its own, but totally got lost when I played with the band. I had the same result with a Swollen Pickle and I was told at the time my 215 cab was at least partly responsible for that.

If you stack them they may get really compressed. Or they may not. It may sound beastly. But usually if you stack muffs they can get really compressed and squash each other out IME.

Well nobody wants that. I know a guy who has a guitar Big Muff, so I'll experiment with that first.
Ideally, the two wouldn't perfectly compliment each other, and instead of canceling or getting too muddy, the sound would get grittier and more chaotic (in a good way?)

I'm not sure. It really depends on where the gain is set. Mind you I was stacking two Black Russians both with high gain. I'm sure it would be different if one was very low gain and the other high. It's worth trying. You may get a massively awesome sound.
