Big Rant: Racist Attack

Solidus, I've been there before and I feel bad that you had to be in a place like that.

You did the right thing by not getting into it with them. The problem with arguing with idiots is that they will bring you down to their level and beat you at what they do best.

Don't let something like this take away whatever pride that you have in your heritage or identity. I have seen several twinkies/bananas who have taken the lower road and lost out on something valuable. For some, fitting in seems like such a worthwhile goal. In the end, you will be recognized for what sets you apart.

Also, don't let this get in the way of riding on the bus, going to school, etc. It's not their bus, school, or world. It's yours too. Don't give it up.

In some ways take this as a mixed blessing, you know who your enemies are. You know who to avoid and who can't be trusted. Sometimes, it's better than wondering what people are thinking/saying behind your back.

If you need to vent or whatever, feel free to PM me. I've been in your shoes before.

Dennis Miller said it best: "Why hate someone based on the color of their skin, when if you just get to know them as a person, they'll give you much better reasons to hate them."

"Why hate someone based on their skin color"?

Because we are pathetic humans that rely too much on our eyes...it's quick, it's easy, we're lazy, etc. I used to wonder if the entire planet Earth was blind. Then what? I guess it would be 'smell' or 'dialect'...no doubt it would be something!

IMO, the word "Racism" has been bandied around so much it's lost(or is losing) the severity of its meaning.
I don't know exactly what's in any person's heart; I generally feel people are predjudiced, bigoted, stereotypical, or ignorant.
Like I said, we're pathetic.

Yep, that use of the English language will keep you employed on the loading dock at the factory for years.

Thanks for proving my point.

That wasn't necessary bro. I had two things I wanted to say, but chose to say one. I was going to say "for many years", but realized saying "a good job as well" was adequate.

Unfortunately, I missed one word to remove from my post. As a result I get some smarty-pants like you insinuating I am some mindless moron working on a loading dock. Yeah, you guys go ahead and laugh at me all you want. I can kick your butt. :D

All that aside, your comment was still wrong.

Too true.

As bad as it is to be discriminated against, I'd rather be on the receiving end of it than to be the one who inflicts it on another person, even if their quality of life is better than mine.

I hate:

people that decide to sight in their deer rifles without worrying about their backstop while I'm downrange...
people that set up meth labs in cheap hotel rooms...
people that decide to commit suicide/grievous harm to themselves in a place that is inherently dangerous to go in after them...
people that come up to the back of my ambulance while I'm starting an IV and ask me to move the ambulance because they are blocked in...
and others if I think about it

These are all prejudices. I have earned each of them. But notice that none of them are race-dependent. I never saw the guy(girl?) withthe rifle, but most of the other folks were the same color as me.

LOL, that's an interesting way of looking at things. :D

Seriously though, if you ever meet someone who is racist, ask them why? Chances are they can't give you a logical reason.

Good point. For the longest time, I disliked certain races. An ex-girlfriend asked me exactly that one time...WHY? I could have blamed it on growing up in a purely white small town, or my parents, but I realized it was my own ignorant stereotypes. I started to examine my thought processes then. They were faulty, with some help I changed them. That old girlfriend changed alot about me, and I am glad for it.

That's crap. There are times when racist attitudes are very much understandable (albeit always distasteful) and come from all kinds of experiences. Here, I'll throw one out for you right now: I don't like aboriginals (native Australians). They're dickheads. I've been assaulted IN THE STREET by these people many times, and as such have developed a disliking for them. It may be a little irrational to despise an entire race for the errors of a few, but the point is that it's kinda like getting burnt - you just inherently learn to be cautious of all fire, not just the match that singed your eyebrows. Who knows? With the freshman chick in the threadstarter's original post, maybe an Asian took her dad's job or something abstract like that? I just feel that it's even more idiotic to write off someone as being 'stupid' because of a racist view that they hold. Dig a little.

I'm not too sure which I hate more:
The stupid ignorant people who discriminate against other people based on the color of their skin.

or

The stupid ignorant people who are too "proud" in their heritage to be able to laugh at themselves about it.

If I got bagged on for being Chinese, either for all of "my women" having tiny feet, or me having a tiny penis, or myself, my siblings, and all my friends having been molested, or whatever it might be, I can laugh at myself along with the stupid people, because while these things may hold some truth to them, they are based on practices that just don't go on anymore. Except maybe the "small penis" thing, but then again, I don't run around trying to compare mine to everyone else's because I'm not that insecure.

[that wasn't too inappropriate, was it?]

It all depends on the situation. Sure, my friends or acquaintences and I can joke about how my family eats dogs or how naturally adept I am at dry cleaning. It's all in good fun, and as a guy who can dish it out with the best of em, I can take it as well.

But when it gets to a point that it is uncomfortable, confrontational, or physically threatening, you have a whole different story. It's hard to laugh at yourself when you are about to get beat up or someone is out to pick a fight. It's hard to laugh with those who are out to do you harm, either emotionally or physically.

My 2 cents

Your day will come, Vince. Keep your grades up and your goals high. And after college you will be deciding whether neanderthals, as you have described, will/won't have a job any longer. You will be in "the driver's seat."

Believe me, I know - muscles and size don't count for anything after high school.

Ditto!!

It doesnt matter if you are asian, african, euro, christion, muslim. You will get picked on or get in a scrap here and there. It all depends on what you do between the hard times to better yourself.

You will get thru this and other difficulties. Remind yourself this is just a small part of your life and it will get better. Hit the books, keep your nose clean and focus on your own bussiness and you will be the victor!!

That is such bull#*%^ man, If I was there I swear to god I would have floored them all, including the girl. Racism will definately rile me up beyond a point of control, and the fact that they had to gang up on you shows just how weak they truly are. If one of them had something to say, they could have said it by themselves, not have there cronies back them up.

Try and sit with some friends or kids you know on the bus and if they mess with you again, your friends will be witnesses to their utter stupidity and you can get them expelled. But whatever you do, do not fight them. It will only lead to worse situations.

But if they throw first punch, its game on.

I've been thinking about this thread a lot today. And I had one of those 'wow' moments when it occurred to me that, as vanilla as I look, MY people have been victims of this stupidity too.

Nowadays an Irishman or a Native American is not necessarily going to be abused for being Irish or Indian. But it's not really that long since the days of "Dogs and indians keep off the grass." and "No Irish need apply."

I was going to write this in another form ,but once again I have been been jilted by the post of AliveONE, who has seen and knows all.

I bow to his wisdom, take it to your heart.

He knows you will be on that bus tomorrow, that is your biggest hurdle. And to get through the next day.
---

Know that there are many people who care about you
that have never seen your face, regardless if you are Chinese, Korean, Native American, Afro American, Brazilian, or like me , Icelandic-American.

For a little story, I was always SHUNNED in my homeland, because, I was raised in America.

And here I was made fun of because I had a funny name. It wasn't until I was in High School and I focused and broke through on some areas I concentrated on, that the jerks went away, and the people who cared about me finally let loose. And I found that feeling of belonging.

Lift your head high.

Breathe deep your heritage, you are among
friends. Keep you heart open, there are others that are with you.

Do Not Fear. Never be afraid.
And you will be fine.

Thor

PM me any time if you need to discuss this.
Any time...

I'm sorry you went through that. I know EXACTLY how you feel, being a black guy. It's amazing that people swear that humans have evolved, but yet, as a whole, we're still as dumb as a bag of hammers.

Some even say racism and bigotry is a thing of the past.

Right.

There's no shortage of stupid people in this world. it's part of this test called life to figure out how to deal with them. So far you've done good.

Wow, I cannot even begin to describe how angry I am right now.

So it all started on the bus ride home from school. Today was midterms day, schedules all messed up, and I got less than six hours of sleep last night, so obviously Im already not in the best of moods.

I'm sitting in the back of the bus, which is new because I usually am towards the middle. Anyway, these four kids, two of whom were already there before, kind of "grouped up" around where I was sitting. They started talking about some girl and her boyfriend, who they were making fun of by calling him "chester the molester." Then one of the kids said "I wonder who that is" to "set up" the attack. Then, one of the kids pointed at me, and thats when it all started.

Another one of the kids said "oh you should punch him for doing that", but really, he was using that so if I did hit the kid, it would give the rest of them an excuse to physically attack me. Then the rest of the kids let loose with the racist BS, saying things like "all chinese kids were molested as children" (I dont even know how he came up with that) or "why are all you f***ing ch**ks so f***ing weak?" And those were the mildest insults. The others I am not even going to repeat here.

The most unbelievable part is that one of the kids is in my police explorers post. He was not really a friend, but he was decent, until today. The other kids were a random kid on the bus, my "punk rawker" neighbor, and a loud-mouthed freshman girl, whom I've had the impression hated me for some reason for a while because she's always glaring at me.

What surprised me the most is that I have heard the freshman girl yelling at another kid on a different day because he used the word "fag" and "gay" in a derogatory sense. So according to her, its wrong to bash gays, but right to be racist. She was really the ringleader in all this, and what angers me the most is I cannot do anything about this. If she were a guy, I would've most likely hit her, or at least said something. I just sat there and tried to ignore it.

I can't believe the way some people are, so shallow and ignorant. Even though I did not do anything about it, and just sat there and took it, I feel like I regret not doing anything. Some people are just ***holes.

Then afterwards, my neighbor, one of the kids involved, had the nerve after getting off the bus to ask me if I had a lighter so he could smoke his weed. I wanted to floor him.

It's been a rough day.

Thanks for listening.

Vince

If it happens again, just say: "hey chill, man, we're all pink on the inside!"

But I know how you feel, I haven't experienced anything to that degree, I've had my share of put-downs for being one of two Polish/Eskimos in the central PA region...

Take the experience, and learn from it. Whatever doesn't kill you, makes you stronger. You now have firsthand knowledge how cruel, and ignorant people can be.

Brad....yeah, I sure did. In the end, I don't mind being fodder for some dudes attempts at comedy. It's all good. :D

I'm asian. I've never been a victim of personal racism, certainly not called weak. I'm 6'0 and 250+ pounds it would be ridiculous for someone to say that to me. Frankly I have no tolerance with racism, and frankly if I'm being attacked with racism-honestly I'd probably resort to violence(I'm not even a violent person VERY BIG pacisfist, maybe due to people getting very mad when I hurt there son's in early life due to me not being able to control the power of the pain I inflicted)-I'd rather not even try to help someone who's racist/it's so stupid that if someone doesn't realize that as soon as they think that-there not worth helping. This pathetic human population of racist needs to die out, mentally-physically I could careless. Frankly if someone is gonna be racist and agressive with it, I'm going to be twice as agressive with my anti-racism. If someone doesn't violently push his/her racism towards me, but I know it. Maybe I'll help him or her realize there own stupidity, but chances are I'll tell them **** you and go my way.
