I will point out, before anyone reads this as a racial slur, that a "Koorie" is an Australia Aboriginal from around (the state of) Victoria.

That said, I think for someone as young as you (Tones) to have developed a prejudice like you have against a people is sad. I lived in Redfern (NSW) for a year and never had any problem with the Aborignal people living there (it is a notoriously bad suburb). Maybe you should take the time to educate yourself rather than writing off an entire group of people based on a few bad experiences.

Absolutely it's sad. I wish it could be otherwise, but my mind has just formed a particularly resentful link which is hard to ignore. That said, don't you lot misunderstand me; I'm not _racist_ as such. I wouldn't ever verbally or physically assault someone for being an aboriginal. I don't harbour any hate at all. If someone throws around the term 'abo', or even 'black fella', I reprimand them with a stern index finger . I'm not up for that kinda thing.

You, however, presume the same as Hobbes - that my experiences with aboriginals are limited to a 'few bad ones'. I don't want to be all flowery and dramatic so I'm not gonna bother going into things trying to make you understand, but I will assure you that I have extremely valid reasons for indirecting a certain amount of distaste at, well I guess in particular CBD-dwelling aboriginals - it's like a bizarre mix of pity, trepidation and anger. Do I qualify for the KKK yet or what?

I'm not trying to suggest I know what it's like to have had experiences like yours, and I admit that they're unfortunate to say the least. But I take issue with the fact that you use these experiences to paint a broad picture as to what an entire race of people is like.

If you post views on a public forum then you have to expect people to speak up if they disagree with them. I disagree with the way you have generalised an entire race of people based on your experiences with what you can't deny is an tiny percentage of their population. Therefore I'm not going to shut my mouth.

Like I said, I don't pretend to know what experiences you had had, and I can totally understand you feeling resentment and anger because of these experiences, but to write off an entire race of people???

Hell, man. Disagree as much as you like. Fact is, I AGREE with you - I'm not taking the right attitude, but it is a product of history which I find hard to get around mentally. But you still don't get it, which is why I took issue with your post. I don't 'write off' aboriginies strictly speaking, I am wary of them due to previous experience. I'd happily converse with one, but I'd be initially uncomfortable, you see? Like that.

Yeah, I had a problem like that when I lived in southern California. Not with "Koories" though. It didn't go away until I moved and found out that they weren't all that way. When I lived down there, and experienced it alot, it was hard to believe otherwise.

It sounds like you're describing your own racist attitude towards aboriginals, as support for your premise. You're explaining why you've come to this point. Fine. Personally I can see why some might think the reasoning is suspect... if I said the same about White people based on a few bad encounters I've had...

The problem is, while you later explain that you're not writing them off, saying you dislike them and calling them dickheads didn't illustrate that point early on.

Again, just an observation. You seem fairly angry and I thought I'd let you know that I think there may have been a better way to explain yourself and set the tone early on. I didn't comment before but felt now it might help. YMMV

When I went to primary school in Brisbane, QUeensland (which is the Australian equivalent of the deed south for you Americans), I went to "white" affluent Catholic school. In any event, I was the only "dark" person at the school and used to be referred to (by the teachers as well) as "the black boy".

(These were people who had probably never seen anyone of colour in their lives ) - That was a while ago though, I assume things have probably changed!

Yeah we had a "black boy" at primary school. He was Indian.

My dad is Burmese, but his family left there as refugees when he was 4 (so none of us (even dad) know much about Burma).

My mum is a Kiwi (ie English background) New Zealander.

I was born in NZ and moved to Aus when i was 6.
