Big Rant: Racist Attack

I've never been a target of racism, as I'm white, but I have my made fun of due to my disability.

I haven't brought it up much, only when a reason arises, but I was born with Cerebral Palsy. I was lucky enough to come out with a mild form of it. My speech and motor skills are fine, but my walking is affected. My right leg is weaker than my left due to do blockage on that side of my brain shortly after I was taken home from the hospital. As a result, when I walk I limp to my right quite a bit. Oh yea, I walk with crutches (forgot to mention that. They're jet black, so atleast they look cool) :) As a result I've been the victim many times of getting picked on either to my face about how I walk, or behind my back. A few occurances that come to mind were when I went into McDonalds and rounded the corner to the bathroom when I heard two girls in a booth "Sssh, don't make fun of the crippled person" One kid I went to school with even read me the definition of crippled from a dictionary to me when he said I was crippled, and I defending myself, saying that I wasn't. The other instance was a time when I was a restaraunt with my g/f at the time. I had gone to the bathroom (Weak bladder *lol*) and when I came back she looked really p!$$ed, and wasn't eating. Apparently a group of people walked by our table and one guy said, loud enough so she could obviously hear "I really don't see how anyone can go out with a person like that" It bothered her more than it did me. I've also been in a few relationships where the family of my g/f (mainly the grandmothers) Tried convincing their granddaughters that "You can do so much better" "He'll cause you nothing but problems in the end" (apparently they think I'm sick constantly, in the hospital every week and doomed to get steadily worse) "How is he ever going to a father? He probably wouldnt' be able to play with his kids or anything" Not to mention 2 girls who thought that I would be a lousy parent due to either my not being "agile" as everyone else. Or that I probably couldn't even HAVE kids, and if I wanted to adopt, I'd probably get rejected because who'd give a child to a guy with a disability.

But I've learned to try and laugh it off, and know that I've done well for myself and that I'm more determined and willing to try than some people I know. I just tell myself that they're just ignorant and let it roll right off. I too don't have any tolerance for racism or "homophobes" for lack of a better term. Or anyone who judges people based on appearances. They too are just ignorant, and unfortunately have most likely been brought up that way.

I do feel good though that when I do have kids, my kids wont be like that at all. They'll be used to growing up with me, so they probably wont look at anyone who is "different"..uh, differently :) And that makes me feel good that I'll be able to bring another person(s) into this world who will learn to look and treat the people around them as equal.

Yeah, in college, I was racist toward Chinese people. If I saw a lot of them sitting there when I walked into an engineering class, I'd say, "Well, there goes the curve. Looks like I'll be getting a B."

Seriously, racists are the lowest of the low. The best you can do is identify them, stay away from them, and go on with your life. In the long run, they will have a hard time dealing with life because of their infantile views.

With respect to the guy who's in your explorer troop, you might want to approach him privately and ask him why he participated in that scene. My guess is that he'll be embarrassed over it. Hang in there.

im white, i don't get discriminated against... but man its some stupid sh!t. it really does piss me off to see racist people in action. for some reason i can' help but think of that song "pea" by flea.

though i must admit something, i don't judge people based on their skin color but i can't stand "black" people, now don't be offended because i don't mean people that have darker skin than i do, i just don't like the whole "im a gansta and i be thuggin and rollin on my dubs with my bling bling" crap and anyone who does it is stupid... its just a coincedence that most people like that are black but its not a pre-conceived notion that i have.

ah yes im white. but those dudes sure are D*cks though. yeah racism sucks when in my small school most of them are wannabe gang-bangers :o :spit: idiocy at its finest. especially theres like a group of 4 mexican gangbangers that r the biggest pricks ive ever met in my life. and i guess Raul is there leader, and tryied to start a fight w/ me in the hall w/ me in school one time. it was a little push and shove match, and he came out of no where and started messin'. so here started goin off, i try to leave, and he wants me to stay. So im thinking to myself, "ah, crap im going to get my ass beat." hes like 190-200 lbs, a year older than me, and 2 inches taller than me. im like 5'8" and about 130 lbs. then i told him what the hells your problem? Then he starts talkin serious sh*t to me, saying he hates me, hates whites, hates [rockers], etc im a pretty cool guy and all, but i dont remember the last time i was that pissed, so kicked him in the shin as hard as i could and i ran like hell. then me and him go 2 the principles, and we both got suspended. the good news is he never talked to me ever again, but hes given me the "hommie G- ima gonna kill yo azz son-look." so thats about the end of that mess for now. but i also know what i did was wrong too. but remember, lifes about picking up the bass jamming with your friends and rocking out.

well, hopefully I can put a different perspective. You mentioned that girl who yelled at someone for saying "fag" so obviously she has some conviction. And that one dude asked you for a light. Perhaps these people were not aware of how upset they were making you. Perhaps they were just making some tasteless (very tasteless) jokes at your expense and assumed you were taking it in stride. The fact that you didn't say anything might've been a small mistake. Next time you're in a situation like that, just look them in the eye and say "I really don't appreciate those comments" or something like that. Just let them know that it upsets you without making a scene.
It's real easy to disassociate yourself from people of prejudice. But ignorance breeds fear and fear breeds hate. An ignorant mind must be taught, who and when better than you and now?
They may be racists, but they're still people. and even if there's a small chance they'll understand and learn something, that chance is worth taking.
I know it's cliche, but it's all about breaking barriers and building bridges.
