Big upgrade in store for meee

OK, I just read through the last few pages of this, after not being on much the last couple of days.

Trolling is the act of starting threads or making posts designed to start fighting and hate. He's not trolling. If anything, others have been trolling him. He has not posted once that I recall with the intent of insulting anyone or starting a fight. IMO anyone who has been insulted, angered or had other negative effects from him that lasted in your head longer than it took to read it has more serious issues... might need to double up those Prozacs. That was an insult, but not trolling.

On the hearing. I think he was joking about only needing to see the drummer. Hopefully he takes it seriously. I really doubt his employer lets him work in a noisy environment without hearing protection, and probably safety training to the point of more psychological damage than it's worth, compared to loosing a few fingers and maybe an eye.

Anyone who's been in a modern "Japanese" auto plant would know that the workers on the line are very well trained, do their job to perfection and are treated like gold. The drive one screw into one hole at $50/hr is Detroit. He's probably working on 4 or 5 different models coming at him down the line. He has to do a lot of accurate work very quickly and failing is not an option. Ever fell behind and stopped the line @JWH91 ? Not many times, or he'd be flipping burgers.

How many of us got into bass and took every bit of advice right off the bat? Did we sell off what we had and go with the TB approved gear before the first page of the thread finished? And the guys that have been playing for years and years, no TB and maybe no Internet, egads, hard knocks university. Not all learn the same way. Now we even have categories, called disabilities, that describe some differences between the very intelligent individuals who see things differently (not implying who has what disease here; well, maybe those who are all bent out of shape about now). He's not slow or stupid, everyone goes through the same phase, he's just hanging in their and vocalizing, asking and learning. A lot of new guys don't survive the initial attack and never return to TB. Others, I'm sure, ignore the advice and go into lurking while wasting time and money on stuff that won't work, doing it their own way. After my first few months I here, personally refused to start new threads for a full year.

Anyone who reads these work and suffers ill effects should add me to their ignore list. Maybe monitor you BP and re-read the whole thread then ignore everyone that raises your BP. Meanwhile, cut him some slack, just enjoy the thread. I have.

BTW: @JWH91 - A few days ago I asked what gear you had on hand and you answered. I stopped perusing my thoughts as you started looking for an 810. Once you have the new gear in hand, let's see what you have left and we might be able to help you setup a helluva barn stereo rig for playing back music. And yes, I'm psychic. I knew you had a PA power amp, knew about the cash hidden away, know where you live (accurate withing hearing distance of the barn on a Saturday night), and I know what happened in the bathroom in more detail than I want to know :D Rock on!

Thanks for explaining this.

I ran one with my hartke kilo. Good sounding cab. I preferred it over my hydrive 810. Now get a second matching one.
You prefer it over the neodymium/aluminum speakers or the design of the cab? Specifics please. Because I'll need something more than 400w to use two 8 ohm cabs in bridge mode. According to hartke i will see the full 1100w running both 8 ohm cabs in bridge. Guess that's why they made the Hydrive models

I thought it sounded better than the sealed hydrive 810. Whether it was because of the can design or the speakers, I'm not sure. But it had more mids and cut better. The kilo shares the same power amp section as tour LH1000 (Which I've also owned), I ran the 4.5xl off of one side so it was only seeing maybe 300 watts. Never had an issue being heard. Though my shows are usually only 100 people or so and I usually get a DI.

Also, wasn't a fan of the LH1000. I don't care for the eq. It's always mid scooped unless you set bass and treble to 0 and mids on 10. Then it's flat. There's no way to have a mid boosted tone on that amp. Bass and treble are boost only. Mids are cut only.

I just bought a Hartke 4.5xl for $135!

Finally something sensible. If it's in good shape (all drivers working, no tears, etc...) that's a good cab with a pretty solid low end (I have one). Not super high power handling though. If you get another, just run each one off both sides of your head (should be 210w into each one). That should be pretty damn loud. You have to stop chasing numbers. As some have said, the point is not to "squeeze" all the watts out of your head. If you cab/s can handle twice what your head can put out into a given impedance, you're in good shape. So 2 400w cabs each getting (up to) 210w is just about perfect. And that's going to be 6db louder than 1 cab at 210. And you almost can't blow anything up that way (although I'm sure you'll try). If you still need more than that just get another pair of those cabs and run 1 pair on each side of the head for a total of 640w into 1600w of cab. Again, the point is not to push the cabs to the brink of destruction so you don't want a 1600w amp to go with those cabs. Having the cabs rated at 2-4 times the head is usually ideal, as long as you're not dealing with a very low power head or very low efficiency (ie power hungry) cabs.

haven't read through all 30 pages of the fear and loathing and hate and anger, but i'm still hung up on the idea that this big loud-ass metal club getting national acts somehow won't put @JWH91's bass into the PA. i literally don't believe that.

maybe you mis-heard, or maybe whoever told you that is full of it, or maybe somebody said that the soundguy won't mic your cab? i can believe that last one, some soundguys don't want the minor extra hassle for an opener with no time for soundcheck, but the normal procedure is still to get the bass into the PA, typically with a direct box connection.

since any real place will put your bass into the PA, your onstage rig needs to be loud enough for you to hear it, which means it typically needs to be as loud as the drummer is acoustically. anything more is the responsibility of the soundguy.

you got the lh1000, that's a good simple powerful head. bridge it for 1000w at 4Ω, that'll be more than enough with the right cabs. the 4.5XL cab is decent if heavy, your best bet for maximum crush is a matching 8Ω 4x10 to stack it on. identical is best, something like a regular 4x10 XL is close, some other 8Ω 4x10 will be OK.

forget the 18s and the 12s and the 25hz and all of the rest, none of that crap helps real world and in fact usually makes things worse. a big wall of matched 10s with lots of power will let you hear the actual notes you're playing, super-low or not.

with the LH1000 and 8 good matched tens, don't be surprised if they ask you to turn it down :wideyed:

Why don't you just buy something that you KNOW is correct and properly functioning? Haven't you gotten tired of these false starts yet???
I was under the impression that the cabs were the same in size but apparently the hydrive cab with the neo are 15" in depth instead of the 18" of the 4.5 I have. I can't really pass up 4 neodymium speakers for $280. I feel like a dummy if I didn't jump on it, just trying to figure out what I could do with them since the hydrive cab is shot beyond repair

I don't see that happening. The main acts shared a 1600w Aguilar 810 and it was DI, just no where near loud enough. Just afraid that if I go the 2 410 route that they won't DI me like the opening band I saw back in October there
