Bigger headstock=more resonance?

Sorry for the thread derail… done after this post. The orig nut is lying on it's side (residue is from the rw fb face) Pretty amazing how far off it was. So easy out, easy in. This bass always sounds like a monster so it's hard to quantitate, but I'm a fan of brass nuts so I'll say it definitely helps what's already awesome! (awesomer?) :rolleyes:

This one had the brass nut when I got it (about 15 years ago). I tend to think the carve is more important than the material. BTW I also have a '64 Epiphone Embassy Deluxe with a similarly huge "bat wing" headstock.
For the record, relative to the original subject, I think the headstock size has very little to do with any noticeable amount of resonance (though both of these basses are quite resonant...)

Juries still out for me.., wood is a real element in the mix, and where and how it relates to the way the instrument sounds can be measured. I'm not aware of clinical tests related, but it's undeniable some instruments have it, and some don't. (resonance, tone, character…)

The ratio of headstock mass to body mass does have an effect on resonance. I know this because switching out the stock tuners for lighter Hipshot tuners on my Rick 4001 moved the notorious dead spot on the D string, 10th "fret." Whether a headstock of greater mass increases resonance relative to the resonance of the same bass with a smaller headstock or not, I don't know.

Yes, as has been discussed, a change in mass at the headstock changes the resonant behavior of the neck and overall system. The question was whether a larger headstock would make a difference. In your example you took away at least 200g, maybe even 300g when you changed your tuners. That would be at least ten times more than what the bit of wood would weigh between a larger and a smaller headstock.

The Embassy is amazing. It weighs next to nothing and the whole thing just vibrates like a tuning fork with any note; this is more what I think of with a resonant solidbody (as opposed to having a specific resonant or counter-resonant frequency - like wolf tones on upright/dead spots on both electric and double bass).

Nice job on that brass nut!

Weight is not the biggest factor when it comes to resonance though. If that 10x weight is all dead/lifeless it will negatively impact the vibrations if anything.

Likewise if the 1/10th is super resonant it could have more of an impact then 100x as much dead weight weight would. Shape also seems like a factor.

Say that 1/10th is enough of a shift for a more resonant shape/ structure, then it could have a fairly large impact. That is all just in theory though but I bet some is partly correct ;)
