Biggest bang from the smallest combo?

The TCElectronic bh250 2x8 is around $550. Haven't played one directly but I have the amp head with a 2x10 and like it (I got great deal on this used so I went bigger for the price). Not as convenient but saved a bit of cash.
You can also run it to a pa or another cab if you want more volume at some point.

I picked up the BG250 1x15 with portability and small gigs in mind. It's still a bit of a boxy thing to carry around despite it's light weight and reasonable power and price tag.

I A-B'd it against the 2x10 and 1x12 and this was the best sounding of the bunch to my ears. That said, I *may* trade it in for a 2x8, if only for the portability/porch weasel factor. Need to find one and play it first, though! The 2x8 is the only one in the range that can handle an external speaker cab. I guess for those bigger gigs, I could bring another cab.

Seems to be a lotta love here for the Fender 100 rumble. Maybe I'll try to find a GC that has that and a Markbass 801 that I can try side by side to see if there's a huge difference. I like the Markbass footprint better but I suspect the lower power and smaller speaker are not going to stack up well against the rumble.
My size and sound benchmark continues to be the Markbass CMD 121P but even the used ones are bumping $800.
I'm always intrigued by the Carvin stuff but unless I can find a used one to try first it's off the list.
Keep the ideas coming!

Maybe check the Carvin microbass thread. Maybe someone lives close enough that you can try one out. I know Kohanmike lives in Cal, but not sure where. I understand where your coming from though. I took a chance with mine and I'm glad I did, but you or someone else may not feel the same way. The Rumble 100 or 200 are pretty nice if you like the deep baked in Fender sound which is pretty awesome.

Another options I forgot about is the new Phil Jones Session 77. Two 7" drivers, 100W. It sounds amazing up to relatively loud volume and handles a B-string very well. It's not large by any means, and MAP is only $399. Probably the best sounding 100W bass "practice" amp I've ever played, and perfectly suitable for what you describe.
Interesting!
I've never heard of the Session model before. I was looking at their Two by Four and really liked the footprint but I can't find any size info on the session model. The price is awefully tempting.

Will do!
