Biggest jerks in music

Remember that the Beatles stopped doing live concerts just because the same reason: Audience behaviour. They couldn't hear themselves. Do you think they'd stopped screaming just because Lennon/McCartney told them not to?

Jarrett is doing what he is doing. Many like it.
Not sure he needs help.
As to audiences not behaving appropriately?...well...send them out of the auditorium and all's well.
Because of coughing?

Now, Glenn Gould stopped doing concerts just because of that. Exactly the same reasons as Keith Jarrett and not the Beatles. Stop doing concerts if there's anyone in the audience that bothers you, simple as that. No one complains and all is well. Lecturing, and preaching is just bad conduct, or manners. Or as I see it ... the very definition of jerk. And it's not going to fold anytime soon given the amount of cell phones in the audience, and pokemon hunting. It's going the other way, opposite to Keiths wishes. And Fripps.

Actually, the whole M&M clause had a very important meaning and story behind it. The band was worried that their roadies were taking shortcuts and doing a half-@$$ed job with the stage, lightning, ect. Which would prove to be a major saftey concern, so they put the Brown M&M clause into the directions because they figured if the crew wouldn't pay attention to something as simple as that, they wouldn't be taking the time and care with something important as the stage.

Yep. I read an interview of either Gilby or Izzy and that's what they said. The reason was because some of the promoters, venues, setup crews were cutting corners and they did it to make sure that the little details weren't overlooked.

There's a lot of artists, stopped doing concerts just because of that. No one keeps on doing it if they're uncomfortable with the situation. Jarrett seems to be in the belief system, of that all cell phones are going away, and coughing is going away just by scolding and cursing at the audience, like that OUTDOOR Umbria gig, I showed a video from. If a seagull flies by and cries? An airplane comes from above and makes noise? A distant car horn? A train? Motorcycle? It's an OUTDOOR festival, and still Jarrett thinks he can keep all environment silent just like inside a sermon at a church. I'm just saying: get a life. THere's so many distractions at any outdoor festival, that I would know in advance what it's like and would refrain from participating and performing if I was that sensitive. Yet he just carries on, year after year, knowing very well, that that outdoor festival environment gets noiser and the amount of cell phones are increasing among the audience. Jeez....if that ain't a jerk I don't know what is.

The DON of jerks. The undisputed king, and drama queen. Still not getting it, but playing outdoor festivals year after year complaining and interrupting his own concert by mundane things, that everyone else in the business can cope an manage with. And still portrays it as an all acoustic music, in spite of the acoustic instruments being miked up. No more acoustic than Mahavishnu Orchestra or Kraftwerk. Period. It should be printed in all thesaurus and synonym dictionaries that another word for Keith Jarrett is HYPOCRITE. Or, JERK, for that matter.

Thank you. I thought I was going to have to publicly admonish the TB community for its lack of culture. Buddy should have been the first and maybe even the only name on the list!

Ok, then. Keith and Buddy Rich at a tie. Charlie Mingus could be some kind of jerk too, I've heard. But you know, all these musicians with flamboyant behaviour, bohemian lifestyle, adhd, ocd, bipolar, together with alcohol and drug addiction doesn't exactly mitigate the jerk. Never heard of that anyway. The jerk in the box jumps out like it's nothing, and when you least expect it. And yet still people (fellow musicians) works with them. The trombonist Knepper working still will Mingus years after he punched the front teeth out of him, leaving him unable to playe for years. Beats me. I would hire someone, and gather up a posse...;) retaliation would've chewed like a stone in my boot...

I'm not off trying to be negative or anything. I just felt like posting this thread. And before someone says, "Well, how can you say if someone's a jerk, you don't see how they act out of the spotlight", I think how you act in the publics view is very important, and if I think you are a jerk in interviews, on tv, on stage ect. I'm going to call you on it. :) On that note, my picks are

Yngwie Malmsteen
Mike Love (Beach Boys)
John Kay (Steppenwolf)
I used to drink JD like that and couldn't figure out why people were always telling me to turn down:)

I've subscribed to Guitar Player since 1972. The absolute two most obnoxious, conceited, a-hole interviews were Steve Miller and Neil Shon. Miller really rubbed me wrong. The interviews were many years ago, so hopefully, they have mellowed some.
Me too almost. Back when you were lucky to have a single article about anything bass to read.

Probably the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Metallica.

It's over for both bands. The whole "put out music that would make your younger selves puke" routine is the jerkiest thing any band can do and these guys are the first who popped in my head.

I'll never really get that whole thing, but back then I suppose they were about the equivalent (popularity wise) of whatever boy band still inspires little girls to scream over the music today. I've never been to one of those concerts, but I've heard they are pretty much a whole lot of screaming and not much else...or I guess people weren't anesthetized by a constant barrage of media back then, so when they actually saw the biggest band in the world they just couldn't control themselves and had a mental breakdown. Some of those old videos of Beatles audiences are downright scary.

The PA's werent made for arenas back then, either. That's when they started to think, the manufacturers... like "hey we must up the wattage in order to shut the audience up". The PA they used on Shea stadium is what is in most coffe shops or rehearsal spaces today. They just added speakers, without adding wattage.

Remember when people sang i two microphones at the same time? Mick Jagger in Hyde Park for example? It was one for left and one for right side...they couldn't split it. And that was 1970.

Music tastes change, making the same album over and over is boring. My music tastes are radically different from my younger self.

Yeah, Lars has been hated ever since for insisring that artists should be paid for their work.
The last album I bought was SRV and it had one unreleased song on it, and you had to re-buy all the other tunes for the second or third or fourth time just to get that one song. Pure greed. At about 40 bucks per song your right they are getting paid for their work. I'm sure the last thing everybody did on napster was download their discography. And of course you've completely given up your right to privacy.
