Biking '10 part 2

Figure this is the best place to ask for bike part advice. Long story short, another cyclist turned into me without seeing and we both crashed. My bike for the most part is okay, but i bent the front wheel. The guy at the shop said its unrepairable (which im not sure i believe, it was bent, but not THAT bad), and that i need a new wheel, and that i should buy one that he has. In the case that I do need a new front wheel, can anyone give me a recommendation for something on the cheaper end, but still quality? My bike is a Motobecane Record, so its not super fancy, and had Alex rims before. 700c. Thanks

How far does the rim deviate from true- in other words, spin it- how far does the *bent* section wobble? If it's enough to severely drag on the brakes or is pretty much unrideable, perhaps- but if he didn't put the wheel in a truing stand and make a quick 30 second effort at truing to see if it's worth the effort, I'd be skeptical. A second opinion certainly couldn't hurt.

If you really need a new wheel/wheels, I would look at the Vuelta brand road wheels. I have had two sets now, and I couldn't be happier. They are strong, stay true, have a reasonable weight, and they're pretty inexpensive. I'm hooked.

+1 on the Vuelta, and if your rim is actually bent (as opposed to just having bad spoke tension, which is easily remedied), it may really be a loss. Occasionally, a for-real bent rim can be mostly straightened out with a soft mallet, but that's about a 10-15% chance at best. A bent rim is a bent rim.

I would also suggest that you have the fork examined by someone who knows what they're doing...a severely bent front rim is a possible indicator of a bent fork as well.

Scored these mint LX cantis for a sixer today- they'll go on the Retro for the faux-roadie makeover. Don't listen to the fixie crowd- brakes are good.
