Who's that, and why would anybody care about the Grammys?
I wasn't aware of 'bad guy' until recently, it's but got 1.1 B-B-Biillion listens on Spotify so clearly it's a hit.
I mean yeah it's catchy and a fun bass groove, but....Song of the Year?

Why? She's a big disposable pop star, and that's often who gets a bunch of Grammys.
The Grammies may not be perfect, but they may also be terrible.

She put out a catchy song that's resonated with a lot of younger folks? I'm not a big fan, but I can kind of understand the appeal. Honestly, I find it no more confusing than Christopher Cross sweeping the Grammys back then. I never liked his stuff personally, but it was well-constructed.
I think Lizzo is really talented and I like her take-no-prisoners approach better.
The music industry is a corporate business and this is the latest product. It's not what you know, it's who you know. That's what gets you there, not merit.

Yep. She's a kid and kids like kids who make music. Unfortunately, it takes the legitimacy away from the awards. Used to be great songwriting and timeless songs were the rage. I watched but couldn't stomach much of the performers. Even the Aerosmith/Run DMC thing was hard to watch. I liked the Prince tribute but it was overdone IMHO. Cameras panning every which a way and not focusing on any one thing. Way too much focus on theatrics.
The Grammys are not, if they ever really have been, a measure of achievement. It’s a hollow, self-congratulating promotional tool, and nothing more, just like the Academy Awards. Utterly manipulated, and actually quite desperate, as NARAS, and the entire recording industry is increasingly irrelevant.
The Grammy's have been awful for years which has absolutely nothing to do with Billie Eilish who I happen to think is very talented.
I had heard of Billie Eilish, but hadn't heard much of her music, but I came to appreciate her after listening to this podcast in which a couple of musicologists examined her music. Really interesting. Then I listened to her most recent album and I thought it was great. I'm an old dude and generally not a fan of modern pop music, but I've learned that sometimes something is popular because it's genuinely good and my lack of appreciation has more to do with my lack of understanding.

was it as bad as folks say it was? i wanted to see it this morning but it is blocked in the u.s. (through normal channels).
I mean, she writes her own music (with her brother), she's a good performer, she puts a dark spin on the current pop formula, and she has crafted an image that seems to be a statement against the sexualization of young women. I don't hate her, I like some of her music, and I prefer her song winning to "old town road".
I also like Lizzo quite a bit more, she's my pop star of the year.

She’s actually been around for awhile, formerly under the thumb of a svengali doing creepy breathy ASMR pop, and now is seemingly eclipsed by Billie, hence her ‘new’ direction. I wonder if Babymetal’s lawyers have called.

if it doesn't make sense to you, odds are you are not in the demographic they are targeting. nothing wrong with that.

Yes, it was so much better in '77 when timeless giants like The Starland Vocal Band were taking home the awards.

I never expect these awards shows to make sense. Its like asking who is the best shortstop of all time*. It depends how you frame the question and a million other things.
