Billy Sheehan parts ways with Ampeg?

Guys. This doesn't belong here. Get back to the subject. Here, I'll start. If it's true about billy going to hartke, I'll bet that he uses one of the heads with a graphic eq.

Thanks. It's about time someone said something. Arguing about religion doesn't belong on this forum. Unfortunately, on every forum there seems to be a small bunch who can't help themselves. I'm glad I don't know them personally. I don't want to hang out with them here.

Mr. MR PC

When king_biscuit made the comment below, about how

Scientology is nothing more than a cult designed to separate fools from their cash.

I said the same can be said about some basses, based on how some people are about the brands they buy and those who express how they don't like certain brands.

The same could be said about the purchase of a bass.

So a bass purchase is the same as turning your independence over to an group that bases it's philosophy on the rantings and science fiction writings of a psychotic? (L Ron Hubbard) And any way you look at it, taking scientology courses would much more expensive than the purchase of one bass. You can buy just one bass. Commitment to the Scientology program reqiures a long term, and ongoing financial commitment.

I've known L Ron heads who sell anything in sight, to pay for getting to the next level of the church' program.

It belongs here, IMO. The discussion involves all of our collective speculations about BS' move to hartke, and why.

Ampeg and Hartke both make great products for us all, BTW.

***Maybe*** Ampeg doesn't want to be associated with Scientology, and **** hartke ***doesn't mind the association. I'd guess that all BS cares about, ***maybe***, is the FREE advertising he gets with any endorsement deal. I've got old BP rags with his picture on just about every page pushing different products. He was a real cheap date that way, in those early days of his fame.

listen, i play rented ampegs all the time, and other than the brief period where that slappy college boy moron jaime engen ran ampeg (he got fired a year and a half ago), the quality is no worse or better than at any time in their history. as a matter of fact, the cabs are a LOT better than the slm cabs from 2000 on.

what made billy switch are probably one of two things...

1. moving to china left a bad taste in some endorsees' mouths. i know for a fact that justin meldal-johnsen left ampeg because of it.

B. the slappy college boy moron jaime engen completely decimated the artists relations department and fired the people their then-current endorsee roster liked. which probably means they weren't making with the free gear like they used to, and it's very possible they weren't making with the special needs stuff that billy wanted, like eden speakers.

Jimmy, I deal with some of their artists on a daily basis and I can tell you that it was (B).....

Again, as I understand it, they are beginning to play catch up.....time will tell...

No. This site is for gear, playing, etc. There is another section dedicated to general discussion, I believe. Im surprised the moderators haven't put a stop to this. We have heard everyones point. .........have you ever been talking to a drunk guy who keeps repeating himself over and over? Sometimes you have to agree to disagree. I really want to know where billy is going gear wise. I love his tone. I will personally bring this thread to a moderators attention if it continues in this manner. Let's try this again.

Hartke makes solid gear. I know that billy probably preferes to go with a bigger company that can supply him with a familiar rig wherever he is in the world but, Im sure that there is other gear out there that would suit his goals better. He's still going to use that pearce no matter what. Hartke doesn't make anything near as powerful as the svt-4 pro head.

"We have heard everyone's point"

How in the world could you know that? That's impossible, unless you are reading the future with crystal balls, that is! :D

I dig you only want the only gear info, but to some others here, the discussion is more than the amp BS is going to use this year. He's been with Ampeg for a long time, the SVT was his breakout rig. We want to know why he's left Ampeg.

The Bassists Forum is where we discuss bassists, and all things about them, including gear, lifestyle, performances, ect. BS is all over youtube proclaiming his Scientology connection. It's a part of his life he is public with.

I respect him very highly for that.

lh1000 is pretty close. and believe it or not, i could easily see how the hydrive 410's or 810 could sassify billy. they're damn good cabs, imho. but i'm sure the pearce will still be his goto preamp. he's pretty married to that thing.

Well hartke has always been innovative, and they do have an advertising budget and public profile that could work for Billy too. Ampeg started as a conservative company. Maybe they are getting back to that somehow, dunno. Jess Oliver mentioned that he had to hide the development of the original SVT from Everett Hull, because Everett hated rock and roll at the time. (late 60's) hartke has ALWAYS had a rock and roll attitude, you know. So has Billy.

Good points. I forgot about the lh1000 too. I guess that I could see billy running one with the pearce and one for the low end. He used to use and alembic preamp for his low end tone and it is very similar to the circuit in the lh1000. Actually, I could see billy using a carvin bx1500. I own one and it sounds great with my attitude bass and ampeg 8x10 cab. It has many of the features that billy uses in the svt4 and has a better sound IMO.

Yeah, I did some research and realized that I missed a few.:smug: It will be interesting to see what he ends up using. And then he'll probably go back to ampeg with the climate over there changes for the better. If that happens. I would love to see a better version of the ampeg bsp. But, it would have to be an updated version of the pearce g1, complete with a crossover, compressor, etc. that billy uses outboard gear for. It's totally do-able.

I had a Pearce BC-1 for the longest time. I also had the BSP.
The thing i noticed about the Ampeg was output; you really had to jack up the post gain to around 3:00 and the pre around 10:00 to get some volume. I had it paired up to a Mackie 1400i power amp and an Ampeg 410HLF cab (4 ohms)
Bridged mono!! The Pearce had much more headroom. I hope if all goes good, Larry may look into replicating those old preamps because last i read, Billy had 3 left and in that same bassplayer mag(BX3 tour issue) he was pictured with a soldering gun fixing one of them:eek:

Yeah, they should build an up to date pearce with the other goodies that billy uses. He then could travel very light in deed. Then we can talk him into using some earful cabs or something!:smug: Hey Larry, if you can hear me, build billy the preamp and I'll buy one! Consult with me on the features first though.

Well guys it's true billy has left ampeg and is now with hartke When i saw his svt 4 pro on sale at ebay i emailed billy and he actually replied to me this is what he put

The company was sold, the amps are made in China, they do not sound anything like the old amps, there is no support for me from the company (I have to pay to rent them on tour), Victor, Mike Anthony, Will Lee & many others left, as well as many other negatives. By their own statement "we are simply not the same company any longer" (direct quote)

And larry has just posted up on face book this too
