Birdsong Club Pt 2

Check it out my new (used) Birdsong :hyper:
Evidently this is the only painted Birdsong in existence (unless someone has painted one afterwards) that came from Scott though he did not paint it himself .

Also my first 5 string bass.
Really like it so far. The pup's seem deeper than my Cortobass pup's. This one has pretty narrow spacing but that works for me. Needs a good setup and new strings. The strings do not seem to have as much tension as my Corto's maybe because I use 105 gauge on my Corto's ? I need to find a 5 sting set that will go on this bass with around a 135-105-ect gauge. Anybody know of a set like that ?

Anybody ever use flats on a HY5 ? I know Scott say's not to.

Still need to see how much I will actually use the low B. The new band I just joined does play a couple of covers I need the low B for. If I end up liking playing a 5 string I may get a fretless neck put on it. Anyway loving it so far.

I bought the 9H-015P Proto-type HY5 B string only double thru body from Scott and specifically requested flats (Chromes). I have had it pushing two years, play it several times a week, same strings with no problems what-so-ever. There are several threads on TB addressing concerns regarding the use of flats in a thru body application. I believe that with the exception of LaBella Jamerson Deep Talkin' flats there is no evidence of problems. YMVV

edit: Nice score on the white HY5 by the way

Nice! I'm sure you already know this but I'll say it anyway. You need extra long strings for that one. D'Addario makes a flatwound set in the guage and length you're looking for and I believe Ken Smith makes rounds in closed to the gauge you're looking for.

Thanks. Do you know if the Curt Mangan 45-130 will fit the early HY5's ? I got a set with the bass. I guess I will try them to see if they fit. They don't list the length on the package.

Darthbat,
I imagine your Sadhana 51 through your Thunder/Ava 410 rig, will sound stunning. Congrats and let us know.

Banditcosmo,
Wow! That is a very, very, very sweet looking bass. Let us "four-stringers" know how you transition to the five string.
Man, I'd like that beauty in a four stringer!

Hello wonderful birdsong owners!
I'll be buying a new bass within a couple weeks, and I know (through lots and LOTS of gassing :hmm:) that a birdsong would be an incredible choice for me, but I definitely only have the money for one new bass of this quality, and I've never gotten to play one before!

I stoutly hold to the ideal that until I've held a bass in my hands, I can't really know if the two of us will get along, so I was wondering if there are any incredibly gracious bassist relatively close to New Lebanon, NY that would like to hang out for a couple hours, talk basses, and most importantly let me test run their cortobass (which I've decided, after talking to Scott, would definitely be the right birdsong for me out of all the choices).

I would be free anytime Feb. 12-20 (my college is on break then), or if you happen to be close to Long Island, I'll be down that way sometime Feb. 17-20 to try out another upstanding bassist instruments.

If you'd be free, PM me and I'll send you my number so we can talk in person.
Thank you so incredibly much to anyone who can give me a much needed hand, and I can't wait to hear from you.

-Chris

p.s. I would be more than happy to bring along some manner of baked goods as compensation, if you'd like...:D

What gauge strings are you guys using on your HY5's ? The band I'm in tunes down to Eb and I like to down tune my bass so I can play open strings.
Anyways it just does not work with my HY5. The strings are just too loose. I'm using a set of Curt Mangan strings that 45-130 but was thinking of trying the DR DDT strings 55 75 95 115 135. Not sure if they are too big though. Any suggestions ? Note: I tune my Corto basses down without a problem.

Can anybody help me with this ? I really need to find a high tension set of strings this week so I can play this bass with my band. I wonder if flats would be the way to go ?

I don't think we have many Hy5 owners here, might explain the lack of response.

No expert on flats here but I have heard that some don't work well with a string-through setup - they are not flexible enough to make the sharp bends. Maybe there is a set that is both high-tension and flexible. If so, that might be a good place to start. I string mine with extra long DA XL170s and have barely enough tension IMO at standard tuning.
