I just had the opportunity to play one of these today, a fretless. What a solid bass, amazing neck profile, perfect build and setup, seriously a spot on instrument. It was a blast to play, especially since the neck is shortscale and pencil-necky. It felt very similar to my Hofner which feels like home to me. Easily one of the best basses I've ever played and THE best fretless I've ever played by a long shot.
Also I got to meet a fellow TB member, we were talking bass and go figure, he's on talkbass. So cheers to you @acleex38 ! Thanks for letting me play your bass and it was great talking with you!

That's a regular sized guitar humbucker under there so there should be many replacements. The one issue you may have is he attaches it directly to the body so you may have to make some adjustments attaching a new one if you want to be able to adjust the pickup height and reuse the pickup cover.

Thanks! This is good to know, given my tendency to never leave well enough alone. But spending more time with it, I'm having pretty good luck dialing in a consistent "tonal soup" from the 2 basses and SansAmp, and then putting the final touches on the sound via the TH 500.

just ordered a cortobass in korina...rosewood fret board.
super great experience with Scott.

Scott built me this wonderful fretless Shortbass in 2014.

I just ordered his first Shortbass of the year, a fretted one, which will look similar to this one. My MIJ Mustang is going to be jealous, but I find Scott's necks to be much more comfortable, and I love that Lace pickup.

what is it about the neck that's more comfortable? I'm leary of the Vneck since I have small hands. Pretty much the only reason I haven't gotten a Birdsong yet.

I honestly didn't know Scott used V necks. The bass feels so natural to me, absolutely the most comfortable instrument I've ever played. I remember when I first got a Birdsong the string spacing took a bit of an adjustment, but that's something I wouldn't change now.

All I can say in regards to the neck is that it plays so easily. Talk to Scott about it. He does have a return policy if it isn't something you click with, so you wouldn't be completely stuck with it.

I'm broad-shouldered (46" chest), with short arms (30" sleeves) and small hands (great for my decades of working behind car dashboards). The contour of the neck falls naturally into my left hand. The smooth "V"-ish shape feels better to my left thumb placement than the "C"s of any of the Fenders or other short scale basses I've owned. "Your mileage may vary", of course. You should call Scott and see if there's a Birdsong anywhere near Vancouver that you can try out. Scott is an affable guy and likes to talk on the phone - 512-395-5126

The last 3 or 4 basses I've gotten from Scott have all have a C shaped neck (C-Bass, Sadhana, PB-One.) The PB-One is slightly smaller, but I believe that was part of his design goal for that instrument.
I was under the impression that he stopped using that neck profile a few years ago. My Corto from 2010 has the V, as did a couple older Birdsongs that have passed through my hands in the last couple of years.
But the newer ones, especially the maple boards, are a little chunkier have a nice comfortable C shape.

Yeah I think mine is a C neck as well. It definitely is a smooth neck, and whatever the style it is comfortable as can be to play!
