Any time I've had trouble being heard with either Birdsong, it was my own fault for EQing poorly or for running with a heavy fuzz on when there were 3 distorted guitars running at the same time. Beyond that, it comes through loud and clear.

After my financial aid snafu put my Corto-buying on hiatus, I think I am getting close... I sold a Euphonium over thanksgiving and almost have my Dad payed off... I am selling a Bass Clarinet and getting about $450 from the state of OR (tax "kicker" refund) this month, so i may be able to put that deposit down and get Scott started on it (though it looks like he takes a break til Mid January... I guess he deserves it
) Christmas present for me... Keeping fingers crossed...

Keeping fingers crossed...I talked to Scott and the gang once or twice before ordering, and I found out that Scott is very accommodating with the deposit; when I actually ordered, I considered payment in fourths. But in the end I decided to be less of a burden on my parents too (lol) and go for half-and-half. They really are some of the nicest people I have never seen in person.
Seeing what everyone is saying with Birdsongs, my soon-to-be-new bass is for keeps. No matter what you order, I think you won't be disappointed.

Yeah... They were super-nice to me n the kids when we stopped by there over the summer... Gave the kids a sample of bloodwood and purple heart... answered all of our questions, let me play, look, touch... and you're right... very accomodating... I want to get the first half out in one hunk, then do installments if I need... Every instrument they make is so beautiful... even the basic mahogoney cortos are one of a kind by their very nature... Man... I am getting excited again...

: After much discussion with Scott over the last few months about my Corto (was tempted to go for a 5er, but that will be the next one...), and great suggestions from him (he IS the artist here after all...) this is what we came up with... this is what I sent him today:My Cortobass:
-Wild Walnut center, 2 Ebony stringers, and Sycamore wings with black hardware ,
-2 pickup Cortobass
-Fretted
-Small thumbrest
-Supremo headstock
-I assume rear route means your knobs go in through the back? I like the look of no plate on front Like to see as much of the wood as possible Question: Can the chicken head knob on the Varitone be substituted for a matching ebony knob, or (even better) a matching knob with a dot or line or tick or other uniqueness thatd allow me to see which way it is pointing? I just dont care for look of the chicken heads
-And every piece of art should be signed, so Id take the custom built plaque.
That is what I have in mind. I assume there will be other details you will need to ask about. If in the process you ever thought it would be so great/cool/gnarley/phat/keen/neato/beautiful if we did X instead, I would want you to tell me

You're correct on the rear route. Instead of the knobs being attached to a control plate, they're attached to the body. I had my Sadhana rear routed for the same reason of showing as much wood as possible.
When I was discussing the design of my bass with Scott, I had questioned about using an wood knob in place of the chicken head knob. His response was that he liked the chicken head knob because it gives a clear indication of where you are on the varitone and being black it will match the ebony knobs.
I had thought to ask Scott about using knobs like the ones that they make at http://www.thgknobs.com/, but it wasn't that important to me so I never got around to it.
I've seen custom knobs on other Birdsongs so definitely ask Scott about doing that.
It sounds like your bass will be a real looker. Don't forget to post pics when you get them!
I like flat-top metal knobs instead of chicken-heads. Scott's response - "more chicken heads for me."
Bobby - it sounds GLORIOUS. I like the look of the control plates, but with the wood choices you're going with, it would be a waste. Consider the "bbox varitone" over "standard varitone" - what can I say...I'm a huge sucker for the BBox varitone that is in my Cortofusion.
Having one of each headstock - the Supremo is TOTALLY worth it.

I kinda knew what I wanted except what wood to make the body out of... I wanted something with personality, something different and unique... I was thinking something like one piece of something (I really liked those pecan cortos)... I asked Scott if he had any suggestions... He suggested that walnut ebony sycamore combo, and at first I thought "myeh..."... But then after a while I started to feel that and then could not get it outta my mind
!!! So then that was it, man... I am so stoked...
