I voted Sabbath.

I don't know what it is, but I have never managed to get into Priest. I am 47 (born in '74), and I am primarily a fan of rock/hard rock/old-school metal, so on paper at least, I should be a fan, but yeah - for whatever reason, Judas Priest never resonated with me the way, say, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Iron Maiden, etc., did. To the point that, even when they (Priest) played podunk Prince George, BC of all places (ie., the city I live in) a couple of years ago, I didn't bother to go...I SHOULD have, just to be be able to say I saw a classic metal act, but...

I don't DISLIKE Judas Priest - the stuff of theirs that I have listened to, I've definitely heard a group of very talented musicians...but like I said, their stuff overall just doesn't do it for me. The annoying this is, I don't know why! Oh well...:bassist:

What does the guitarist have to do, in each case? Could be a factor. Surfing safaris in the eighties, gave rise to the understanding that Sabbath could be found in every kombi on the coast and must be something special. Not a Priest in sight :) I found a cassette copy of we zold our zouls for rock 'n roll, in a bargain bin, across the road from Manly Wharf, got it for a song back then, and I was in :) I have it on record now :ninja: Still no Priest in sight :ninja: Toss a coin.

Other than the age and location reference, I could have written the exact same reply. I don't dislike them, but they never moved my meter enough to become a fan. Ditto with Metallica.

And I'm still trying to figure out some of Geezer Butler's nuances on certain songs. :bassist:

There are a bazillion musicians who were influenced by Black Sabbath. Not just heavy metal musicians, but from jazz to country, to rap, to classical, and others, so many Black Sabbath songs have been (and are still being) covered, in a wide diversity of genres.

Not to take away anything from Judas Priest, but there's no comparison to the significance of the Black Sabbath legacy.

Everybody is going to say Sabbath but Priest had a longer, more productive (in terms of music output) and more successful run.

Possibly because Sabbath imploded but whatever kills you kills you.

Edit: 80 million records for Sabbath vs 50 million for Priest. I was wrong there.

I like Judas Priest and new it earlier with Painkiller and Screaming For Vengance.
But stuff like Master Of Reality I can listen all day.
Also they groove seventies style.
By the way I liked earlier Priest drummer ( the child molestor )
Scott Dravis is stiffer, less groove, close to zero, I seen them live, but their style wanted to be harder.

I find the solo on All Guns Blazing one of the most amazing.


I couldn't get specific stuff like that for Black Sabath, it's more an overall consistency.

I could not listen to Judas Priest all the time, I would get crazy, but Black Sabath is more manageable.

Sabbath… For obvious reasons many of us know why!

I love Priest just as well though!

The real early Priest albums I think suffer from weak production. Those same songs on their live album Unleashed in the East sound way, way, better! By the Hell bent for Leather album things started to sound good.

Their British Steel album to me sounds the best of all of them!

An interesting point between the 2 bands is to me, Sabbath albums (Ozzy era) got worse by the last 2 albums where I think Priest got better with their later records.

Bass playing wise, Geezer of course! But Ian Hill is as rock solid as it gets. He provides the low end and makes the band sound good. With the huge 2 guitar sound of Priest, busy Bass playing would just get in the way…
Is that any different from Cliff Williams style playing in ACDC?

I see Sabbath is winning the poll and most likely will.
