Block inlays on P basses - anyone else dislike them

It isn't so much the blocks that bother me.
It is that someone messed up a nice P bass by putting a toothpick Jazz neck on it.

Mine had a regular P-width neck on it, which was nice.

I think pearloid blocks are boss, as well as pearloid pickguards. I love the blocks on my Euro, and they are awesome on Jazz basses.

Well, I was going to say that Herrick isn't really into blocks but after seeing all the lovely basses in this thread, particularly the ones posted by Horny Toad, Ric5, & Electracoyote, I have to say, "Yes sir, I do like them".

I like blocks on the right instruments. To me they're like alligator shoes, you just have to know what to wear them with.

dots look like what they are - cheap.

IMO, nekkid > blocks > dots.

I just bought a white AV57RI with black dots, and I can't help but think how much nicer it would look with either no dots or white pearl or even chrome blocks.

Ha ha.. I never cared for burst finishes or red tort (such TB heresy! Please don't burn me at the stake! ) but I love that neck. Pearloid blocks + binding + rosewood is elegant. YMMV. How vanilla would this place be if we all liked the exact same stuff?

Block inlays are so much cooler looking than dots. I'd rather have no inlays or block inlays. There is a thread out here somewhere where thers is a pic of a black lackland with a P/J config with pearl block inlays and it is downright pretty.

I love blocks, on anything. But I do think they look better on a Jazz.

I think blocks look more 'natural' on a Jazz, but my Lakland Duck wears them well...

Does that Fender 70's P bass have a P-bass neck, or a Jazz neck? The GC bass has a jazz neck, but what about the Fender 70's P?

If you mean the most recently released 70's P-bass with the B-N-B neck, it's a P-bass neck (1.625" at the nut).

I have seen block inlays on P's before, usually they are after market stickers and put on by the player. It does look a little strange because you usually see them on Jazzes and it just seems to flow look wise better on them (and I am not just talking about the Geddy). If you want inlays on your P then put them on, if you like it then that is all that should matter. Of course be ready for other P bass players to ask how you got a P with block inlays.

Actually....BOTH of my P basses have blocks

One rw and mother of pearl and the other maple with black blocks

I also have 2 other basses (and one on the way) with blocks...guess I like blocks.....

On most basses,

No Inlays > Blocks > Dots

Though Fender style basses should always and only have blocks and pickup/bridge covers.

This is where I fall into the discussion, lol. I was not around or atleast old enough to experience the "bad" fenders. Lots of stuff from the seventies were poor quality or so I have been told anyways. Was born in 75 so I don't remember anything from then.

I've been playing Fenders since the mid '70s and don't recall P basses EVER having block inlays. Now they seam to be popping up everywhere. For whatever reason I just don't associate block inlays with a Precision bass . Hell, for that matter I don't like Jazz necks on P basses. Of course I had no problem dropping a Gibson p90 in my Telecaster (gui***) so go figure.

Not trying to start a flame war - to each his own - just wondering if anyone else shares my dislike for this arrangement.

I happen to love blocks and binding on maple necks!! Rosewood I like either small dots or no dots.
